2. Hmmm, did you want humor, or are you serious?
I can answer, either way! Good for you, BTW. Not many men are willing to do this. I know several who did, and my respect went way up for them. It's a great way to go, once you're sure you'll never change your mind about any/more children.

And you won't sing in the soprano section of the choir, either!

3. My husband survived his just fine
And I sure appreciated him sparing me the tubal ligation. Though his urologist was reluctant to do it when he found out we didn't have any kids - made me sign a special release and everything. Jackass.

19. I've had one...and no kids, either...
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 02:01 AM by CanuckAmok
I had the same problem from my doctor at the time...a Middle-Eastern woman with four kids. She couldn't accept that a healthy man wouldn't want to sire children, and she refused to give me a urology referral twice, until I threatened to complain to the College of Physicians and Surgeons about her.

In and out of the procedure in a half-hour. Three days with bags of frozen peas down my pants and I was as good as new. Didn't even get sore or swell up, or anything.

And it was free!!

21. Funny - this surgeon was middle eastern too!
But it was a man (Egyptian). He asked how many kids we had (what business of his that was, I don't know) and we answered, "None." He said, "Nine!?!" and we corrected him. I always told my husband we should have let him think we had nine kids - he would have done the procedure then and there!

4. I've had it done, no big deal....
...its an in office procedure, that only takes seconds. Also, it gave my wife and I peace of mind in that she was on birth control pills, and her family had a history of cancer. Not a good combination. Go for it!

8. So you just don't want to worry about babies anymore.
My dad had one done when my brother was two (I get to hear about it everytime my parents visit-not my idea of a fun conversation).
He said that he was sore for a couple of days but that it wasn't that bad.

10. I don't like being reminded of it when it comes to my dad
(does anyone really want to know that kind of info about their fathers).
One of my closest friends husband, OTOH-we like to bring up his snip-n-clip often in front of young men just to watch them squirm.

11. Is it covered by health insurance?
I'm on deck for one of these in the next few months, and I have no idea if health insurance will cover it.

My wife and I are finishing up our #2 right now, and that's it for us. Not sure if I should get it "taken care of" before Jr. is born or after - the stress on both sides of a birth is (for me) incredible.

18. I don't recall, but I don't remember it being particularly expensive...
The procedure really doesn't take 5 minutes. And remember, if your wife is on birth control pills, she is more susceptable to having health problems relating to them, some even life threatening. So there's not a price you can put on her health....

I'm just trying to plan finances for the next several months is all.

Anyway, thanks for the info! These major life decisions are rough, so it's good to know other people who have already made them.

15. Mine was.
That was 10 yrs ago. Kaiser covered it because it was cheaper than the tubal ligation they recommended my wife have after our 4th. Laser surgery done in about 30 mins. I was awake and talking football with the doc the whole time. No discomfort. Back chasing my wife around in 2 days.

16. Years from now, are you going to regale your family with
vasectomy stories on Christmas Eve?

My dad and my uncle felt the need to share this past holiday season. My uncle's story was quite horrifying. I guess it was a new procedure in the late 60's. His doctor had never done one before. He was consulting a manual or pamphlet as he went. I won't get into the gory details - it wouldn't be the same without the actions anyway.

28. I imagine that it gives you an anxiety attack
for these reasons: it threatens your sexuality, and the procedure is done to a very tender part of your anatomy!

27. My husband did that after we had our third child.
I was going to have a tubal ligation, because he was not comfortable about the idea of a vasectomy when we married. (We discussed all this, and family planning, before we got married).

Anyway, after he talked to a couple of friends who had had vasectomies, he changed his mind, and announced it to me shortly before kid number three was born.

Our insurance paid for it.

His doctor was a Catholic, who did not do them. He referred us to another surgeon with no fuss.

I would have had the tubal, and not pressured him. I think it was very nice of him to go ahead with the surgery.
