Orlando is no longer "the south". It's a far southern suburb of New York City. Not that that really bothers me excessively.

3. I live in Miami which for years has been known as the sixth borough
When I lived in New Mexico, a truck driver friend of mine called me "a southern yankee" cause I was born and raised in Miami and he had traveled all over the south.

7. I remember a time back in the 70s when the locals would call it
My - am - muh. I haven't heard anyone call it that since about 1980.

8. Yup, that was my era in Miamuh and yes we did.
The closest I've heard to people who still talk like that is Paul Kangas on PBS who does the Nightly Business Report out of WPBT.

Actually Janet Reno does a little bit, so maybe it's an old Crackerism.

12. True story: Janet was in my dad's HS class at Coral Gables,
my mom was dating my dad and Janet's brother at the same time.

She stayed friends with Janet even after breaking up with her brother, and Janet was my mom's attorney in my parents' divorce. My dad did eventually get over it and voted for her when she ran for Governor.

We used to go out to her house when we were kids, and we even called her "Aunt Janet." My mom's talked to her since (this was all over 30 years ago) and Janet still asks about us.

Sorry for the threadjack, Steve2470. :)

13. Another true story:
Janet Reno took in two former classmates of mine when their mother died. I went to school with these kids in South Miami Sr. High when their mother, who was a friend of JR, died (I think it may have been a car accident, but I'm not sure).
Anyway, the kids were teenagers, so JR took them in and became their foster mother. She would even show up at all the school functions and PTA meetings.
Of course, it was always easy to spot her cause she's so tall.

and some of us actually know our shit pretty well. Though, Ive been told by northerners that I dont have much of an accent, quoth its like it can be telled that youre not a northerner but your southerness doesnt exactly show either. So I sound like a Midwestie  but unlike em I dont say pop.

18. My dad was from virginia and I always thought he had a slight southern
accent, not nearly as strong as some Floridians. But when an ex-girlfriend talked to him once over the phone (she was from arizona), she said he spoke like Jimmy Carter.

19. Where in Virginia was your dad from?
I live near DC so that could explain my not so strong accent.

21. He was from the south
Portsmouth, in the Virginia Beach area. He was a very proud southerner and an even prouder Virginian who spent the last 45 years of his life mostly living in Miami.
