after hearing about Bill Hicks for so long here...

I bought a DVD of his performances and watched a couple of 'em.

Meh.

Funny enough, I guess, but not quite the insightful laugh-riot I was led to believe he was. I liked his material better than his delivery - perhaps with time he could've been one of the greats, but I didn't detect it in what I watched.

I really really WANTED to find him brilliant - I love comedy and comics, and was excited about seeing the much-vaunted Bill Hicks finally... but I found him to be just a very average working stand-up.

5. You really have to listen to his material on cd...

Relentless is brilliant and you are not distracted by his antics on stage. I have seen the same DVD and I was fairly disappointed.

you could well be right. I think a lot of it was his appearance didn't match what I expected, given the material, and his "antics" were a bit distracting. I saw somebody trying to be a little bit Sam Kinison without being able to truly pull it off.

I'll look for Relentless.

9. Get "Rant in E-Minor" and "Shock and Awe"

Those are my two favourite Bill Hicks cds.

I also have the dvd, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
