Regarding cliques...

And the weekend ends with yet another accusation regarding cliques in the lounge. Well, ladies and gentlemen I have some news for you. You are abso-freakin-lutely right about it. Cliques exist in the Lounge. And in GD and in LBN and at your job and your local bar and just about everywhere else you will go in life. Deal with it.

The dictionary.com meaning of the word clique is:

"clique( P )Pronunciation Key (klk, klk)n. A small exclusive group of friends or associates. intr.v. Informal cliqued, cliqu·ing, cliques
To form, associate in, or act as a clique."

God forbid that there are people who establish more intimate (and we aren't talking the sexual kind here) relationships with other posters. What a shame! God forbid long term posters who make reference to "old school" posts from back in the day. Shame, shame! And God forbid those who don't respond to every single post on DU, whether it appeals to them or not. What is this world coming to???? *Woe is me*

*(pause for dramatic arm across brow gesture)*

Let us all just realize that just as we need to earn our stripes in real life, you need to earn them on the triviality that is DU. You will get out of each relationship what you put into it. I can tell you one thing...if a new co-worker of mine started complaining that I was being cliquish with others and not letting them into the group I would tell them the same thing I am telling you.

A. Get over it
B. I am doing things to make you welcome in my own way, but you need to EARN the right to be one of my most trusted associates.
C. Perhaps you should check into some psychological advice or medications, as you are creeping me out and scaring me all at once.

So there. I said it. Cliques are a part of life. You can claim you are trying to avoid them. You can treat them like the plague. You can deny their existence. But they will go on and despite all your efforts you will, at some time, be a part of one.

So lets all chill and be one big happy family again. Cliques and all.

EVERYONE was a newbie around here. I was, you were, everyone.

The only thing I ever found rude about cliques in person were when people would constantly make references to inside jokes with new people around and they'd NEVER explain them, but the people in on it just HO-HO-HO with laughter and the newbies stand around going WTF?

But the last time that happened to me was high school.

If it were to happen to me now, I'd just say "see ya."

And the dynamic of the internet is totally different. You can butt into any post you want and say "What is this about?"

to, but decided not to. Since I was one of the people stating that of course there were cliques, I figured I should say something. That something was incomplete.

Well, you gotta love it. Regarding the earning stripes thing: no one needs to be worried unless they care. If they are so concerned about not being a member of a clique, then they should probably suck it up and start making some friends. :)
