Martini Lunch
Do these happen anymore? At most places I know, drinking on the job is grounds for immediate dismissal. It always amazes me to see how much drinking there is in old movies. 2 or 3 martinis during your lunch hour! I'd be wasted. These people were just drinking martinis all the time.

Anyway, I just thought of this because it;s my lunch hour and I'd really like a martini. I'm actually getting pretty tired of being sober and am about ready for a serious bender.

But I'll just stick to my decaf soy latte for now.

1. I've seen it a couple of places
Though it's less martini and more beer at the local pub. round here.

The financial controller is well known for grabbing a colleague and heading for 'a quick half' at the pub just over the road from my office. Damn fine idea in my book.

2. The job I had before my current employment - we drank like fish
Another woman and I hated our jobs so much, we'd go drink our lunches.

Ah the heady days of booze and self-loathing.........I don't miss them at all.

But on a sidenote, the company I work for now, they're good people. We have beer in our vending machine :)

4. Where I used to work
If you didn't bring beer or whiskey with you, they'd send you home.

Alcohol was officially banned (Wink, nod) because it was a railroad.

We won several national safety awards, being the safest. That was until the mandated random drug and alcohol testing. We couldn't even get an honorable mention after that.

Go figure.

6. It used to be that....
...on film sets (where I work), sometimes after a particularly gruelling/difficult week, or for some other occasion, a producer or one of the actors would buy hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol for wrap on friday. They would send one of the company drivers out, and get enough ice, beer, wine, and coolers to fill a couple of oil drums, and everybody would have one or two before going home.

It was also a great way for a crew to bond, as quite often, each member is so busy working all week, there's no time to meet new faces, etc.

However, nearly every studio I can think of has expressly forbidden this tradition, because of liability issues.

It's a shame...but understandable.

3. Martini lunches
Not exactly martinis, but where I work, the cafeteria carries small bottles of red, white and rose wine, we sometimes have a "wine of the week" special with a glass offered with your lunch, if we have a department party in the building, there are beer, wine and mixed drinks available and if we have a client lunch in the building, there are several types of wine offered. If we go out for a client lunch, it is not uncommon for most of the group to order a drink before lunch and to have at least a bottle or two of wine with lunch.

5. Movie biz:
When you're in preproduction, you can drink at lunch...I think it's almost expected!

But once you're shooting, it's verboten.
