And now a discussion of the most evil of vegetables: Rutabagas
Edited on Mon Mar-07-05 06:40 PM by Liberal Veteran

This vegetable is obviously one of God's sicker jokes on humanity. It a turnip with none of the redeeming qualities of turnips.

And for further evidence, I present this emoticon which is obviously the image of the usual rutabaga eater based solely on the color of the regugitate.

:puke:

Notice that the puke is EXACTLY the same color (and consistency) of the food-like by-product pictured on the can?

3. Parsnips have more sugar in them than carrots.
Parsnips and rutabagas are both delicious. They just both need to be cooked a LONG time... either in a soup/stew or roasted.

6. Rutabagas should be used sparingly in all dishes....
Somewhere in the neighborhood of .0000000000001 parts per trillion of any dish.

4. I have it on good authority that
rutabagas are Republican, unlike Democratic veggies like corn and green beans.

5. Hey, some of my best friends are rutabagas
though I wouldn't eat canned rutabagas (or most canned vegetables) if you paid me.

8. I'm pretty sure rutabagas are pre-canned....
...in exactly the same package in my original post.

9. Call Any Vegetable
Call any vegetable
Pick up your phone
Think of a vegetable
Lonely at home
Call any vegetable
And the chances are good
The vegetable will respond to you
La la la la

Rutabaga, rutabaga, rutabaga, rutabaga, rutaba...

10. Brusells Sprouts are the real evil in this world
Rutabagas are really okay. Try pealing fresh (not canned!!) rutabagas and putting them in a soup or stew in place of carrots. Makes a nice change.

15. Brussel Sprouts are indeed wonderful
If I had to scratch a vegetable off my list it would be asparagus. I find any other vegetable a truly fine source of chow.

13. The only way to eat rutabaga
is to steam them with carrots...use about 1 part rutabaga to 2 parts carrots.

When soft, mash them up, add copious amounts of butter, and also some salt, pepper and dill.

Tasty!

14. Also in potatoes
Mix mashed, cooked rutabaga in with mashed potatoes and get a nice change from plain mashed. It's a good vitamin boost.

16. For Thanksgiving
I cook and mash rutabagas, carrots and potatos all together. The result is tasty and colorful.

17. Well, There's Your Problem
You're eatin' them out of a can. That's a serious mistake.

I like all those root vegetables, inlcuding rutabaga, turnips, celeric, radishes, daikon, and beets. Beets and carrots make a nice cold vegetable salad (cooked) with olive oil, lemon juice, and Moroccan spices (turmeric, red pepper, etc), plus a little chicken bullion, sugar, and Paul Prudhomme's vegetable magic.
