How does one cram a pill down a dog's throat?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 01:33 AM by missb
I haven't had to do this for years (like 7 and a half, which was when I lost my epileptic dog).

I'm obviously doing it wrong. Dog 1, missb zero.

On edit: very important piece of info: she is being treated for food allergies so I can't really wrap it in anything other than an apple peel or cucumber peel. Those don't wrap really well.

4. I did forget to mention the food allergy part, right?
Sorry about that. She is now being treated for food allergies. That makes this a bit difficult.

I think I have to get it down her as is.

3. Put in the dog's mouth...hold his mouth shut
Then rub the throat in downward motion. This makes Fido swallow...learned it while working at vet's office.

6. m'kay. Maybe I wasn't doing it too wrong.
I did that. She was sitting down, I placed it as far back as I could, then held her mouth closed with one hand and rubbed her throat with the other hand. She worked it up and spit it out.

I gave up as the gel capsule disintegrated and white powder went everywhere but her throat.

7. Never cram anything down an animal's throat!
For the love of gawd.

Open it's mouth, drop the pill into the back of the mouth, and then hold the mouth shut.

Lard help us.

8. Cram is probably the wrong word to use
good point. I did drop it in the back of her mouth (as much as possible - she has been put through hell today and I wasn't interested in inflicting more discomfort) but she managed to work it out the side.

11. My cat is so disgustingly obsessed with human food I just have to pretend
to be eating a pill, put it down and he'll gobble it up.

I'm so humiliated for him.

13. Wet mushy stinky food is the easiest.
If the dog likes bananas, you can shove a pill into a chunk of banana and it will usually go down unnoticed.

Now cats, on the other hand, they can be tricky bastards when it comes to pills.

14. Heh. That's how I take pills -- chew up some banana first,
then pop the pill in my mouth!

With my dog, I first give him a fingerful of peanut butter. With no pill. He loves that. The second fingerful has a pill inside.

Cheese or cream cheese or a little sausage have worked too.

On a limited diet and no food tricks, it's gonna be a battle. If they win a few times, they get even better at spitting the pill out.

All you can do it aim the pill into the dead center, back of their throat.

I wonder if it would work to pill the dog halfway through their regular meal, so they are involved in swallowing already and have a lot of digestive juices flowing?
