Today my cat died...(long and rambling)
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 09:07 AM by WillBowden
Though none of you knew her I still want to write down something about Cat.

We first met at a pet store. She was alone in a cage and quietly mewing when I walked up to the counter to pay for my things. As I stood in line I felt small paws tugging on my jacket. I turned around and there was this little gray kitty looking at me expectantly. I reached in and gave her a rub on the chin and she licked my fingers. I was hopelessly in love. I asked why she was by herself and they told me that she was sick and no one wanted her. I flew upstairs and said, "Paul?" and he said, "No." I said, "Please, just come down and look at her." He did. We did.

She was a large slice of joy for such a small cat. She slept in the bed with us, usually snuggled between my feet. She was sweet and adorable. We took her to the vet to have shots and everything done and he called and asked if we wanted our cat neutered. I said don't you mean spayed? No, your cat is a boy.

Then one day I came home from work and she ran into the bathroom and jumped on the sink. A string was hanging from her butt. I touched it and she yowled. Paul took her to the vet and they X-rayed and found a needle inside of her. They told us that if it punctured the lining of the intestine she'd likely develop peritinitis and die. Still we told them to go ahead and remove the needle. When they did they found it did puncture the intestinal wall but they cleaned it out and, amazingly, she survived. And thrived.

We got home and a few days later she was having trouble in the bathroom. We took her back to the vet and they found she was having problems with peeing. They ended up doing some snip and tuck to clear that out (hence the reason we still call her she...it was kind of like a sex change).

Through 17 years she was a sweet, wonderful, annoying, crabby, loving, grumpy bitch. And I would never trade those years for anything. Even when other kitties came into our life Cat was always the favorite.

Today she was very weak. She couldn't get down from the cat tree. Paul called the vet who said to bring her in. He wrapped her in a towel and placed her in a box to take in and I knew she wouldn't be coming home. Before he left the house she died. I'm happy in a way because I wanted to be there with her at the end but did not like the idea of her being put down. At least she died at home with the family who loved her.

1. I'm so sorry.
I got to be with our kitty, Brie, after 14 1/2 years. I was so grateful.
Shared sorrow helps ease the hurt some.

Be good to yourself today.

3. My Condolences To You
We lost our dog about a year ago, but we do have a cat too. We recently found a border collie puppy, and we are looking forward to having a dog in the family again. I am glad for you that you were able to be with your cat at the time of her passing. I know it's hard, but time helps a lot. Again, my sympathies to you.

But it sounds like Cat had a wonderful life with you. I'm sure you will miss her horribly. They are all unique and when they go you just have to open up another room in your heart for another little furball to come.

6. Will, my heartfelt condolences
I lost Chandra, the cat-love of my life, just a year ago. It's terrible. But I'm glad Cat died of old age and was so loved for so long.

7. I'm sorry.
Its always hard to lose a pet. You gave her chance many people wouldn't have given a sick kitten, and it sounds like she was as happy with you as you were with her.

all three of my four legged fur children. I am sending my warmest good thoughts to you and family. I hope that when my 'children' reach that point in their lives, they will also be at home, with Daddy, and will simply go to sleep feeling secure. Peace:grouphug:

Edit: Pooky, Tootsie and DC all think you're cool!

What a beautiful story. I'm glad she died naturally and you didn't have to face having her euthanized. Take care - I know how hard it must be.

12. A favorite of mine
Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Mary E. Frye

I am so sorry.

13. So sorry!
It's been almost a year since our beloved cat died. He was only 7 and died from a strange heart condition that developed suddenly and took him away before we even knew he was sick!

We can now tell stories about him and remember him fondly, and we have 4 other cats and 3 dogs to comfort us (yes, our house does feel like a zoo).

My condolences to you on the passing of your baby. Take care of yourselves.

15. I'm sorry to hear it Will.
My condolences :(

She sounds like a wonderful furry friend, and I'm sure she'll be missed greatly. You gave her a wonderful home and lots of love for 17 years, and I'm sure she appreciated it. And she chose you. Of all the people that she could have picked out of that pet store line, she chose you, that's a pretty bright kitty :).

You did good.

16. Thanks...
I'm kind of in a funk right now but as I always say to my friend...

Don't be sad if I die.
Be glad that I lived.

And I'm truly grateful that Cat was with us as long as she was. :-)

17. Big hug to both of you.
I was tempted not to read this because these kind of things really get to me. I am a dog and bird person myself (too allergic for kitties) but I truly appreciate the kind of love and comfort an animal brings. That was a sweet story about cat and I'm glad that you shared. The price of having animals in our lives is that the relationship always is over too soon.

She'll always be with you in your heart. Allow yourself a few months of grieving especially since she was your friend for so long. If you go to newsgroups try alt.support.petloss or try tyoing in pet loss into google to search for other sites. Peace.

but I swear some nights he jumps on my bed like he used to because I can feel the same weight settle down next to my feet. I guess you never know. But if there is a heaven, you know that your kitty has already reserved a house there for you. Sorry for your loss.

25. Sorry about Cat. But happy you had 17 years together.
Both your life and the Cat's seemed to improve when she came into it!

Love the part about her tugging on your jacket at the counter. Cats choose you, don't they?

(I had a dachshund once who pulled the needle trick. What are they thinking?)

36. I am so sad for you
I lost my 21 year old cat "daughter" almost 3 years ago, and I'm never going to get over it. I cry any time i think of her. We were best friends. It never mattered that she couldn't speak, as a human does, because she was so eloquent in her movements and expressions that I always knew what she was thinking. She gave me 21 years of joy.

I am sorry you lost your beautiful Cat. She sounds as though she was a special soul and meant for you from the very first.
