I'm socially inept?
Some people in GD think I am, because I was home schooled, and deprived of the necessary social development of being with my peers in a classroom environment. :eyes:

Must.. walk... away. :banghead:

11. HAHA! No.
I said, several times, that no one can say for sure if homeschooling is good or bad, it's a personal choice. In some cases it's good, in some it is bad and that the exact same can be said for public schooling.

Sometimes forcing a sensitive child to socialize with peers can be traumatizing. Especially when that child has three legs and a thumb growing out of his forehead like I did.

50. Hey, I'm with you on that
Two of my friends are homeschooling their kids. Both are atheists and dislike the religiosity of public schools these days. I worked with a guy who was quite religious. He and his wife had 6 kids, all homeschooled, and they were all very well educated and wonderful to be around. Another friend is an atheist who homeschooled his 5 kids and they are all jerks just like their dad. So, in light of this, it's pretty difficult for me to generalize.

48. I see their points
Unfortunately, their points have all been shown to be wrong after meeting homeschooled kids and graduates of homeschooling.

I think a lot of people think homeschooling is this magical affair where the parents all of sudden say "We're a High School Now" and don't have any standards to follow. I've known homeschoolers who had a tougher curriculim than my public high school curriculim.

I wish public schools were all high quality enough that I could say I'd rather everyone went to them, but until we get a better education system in this country with quality teachers for all and administrators who actually start making changes in the social hierarchy (it can be done, I tell you!) then I just feel like an idiot telling someone homeschooling is not as good as public school.

Obviously though, you've been turned into a shill of the GOP. That's the other mode of thinking.

51. What you said.
I agree. People have such misconceptions of it and they let a few instances decide how they view the whole, and that to me is not very Liberal of them.

My point in the whole mess was that, no one can say for sure if it's good or bad. In some cases it's good, in some it's bad and the exact same thing can be said for public schooling. It all boils down to what works, and feels right for each family.

56. Exactly
In Alaska a lot of times Homeschooling is the only option. There are a couple of curriculims available to parents, most of them very challenging for the students. So long as kids aren't kept in closets and know what's going on in the world, they will do fine socially.

I wish I could say that everyone should attend public school, because I think everyone would benefit from it. Unfortunately, the school system in the country is so f-ed up I almost think homeschooling is a better option.

Plus - most of the homeschooled kids in the town I live in get together for lessons and whatnot. That really must cramp their social development.

I can't believe the number of people who are so adamantly against it.

I got a decent education in public schools, and most of my teachers were great, but there were "social" experiences I'd have been better off without.

I was home schooled my entire life, I could have gone to public school if I had wanted to, but I didn't.
Sure there are things I missed out on by not attending a public school, like going to prom or something, but it doesn't bother me. I don't feel deprived.

Homeschooling worked for my family and I. :hi:

Edit. All I was trying to say on those other threads, is that it's not fair to condemn homeschooling and to make rash generalizations. In some cases it's a good thing, in others it is not. It's all about what works for you.
