The Gospel goes to press with tabloid treatment
By Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent
A NEWS OF THE WORLD reporter who became a Christian eight years ago has produced a new tabloid, The Son, aimed at non-believers and heading towards the bestseller lists in the Christian market.
The newspaper, designed along the lines of a traditional red top, sold 40,000 on its first edition and 62,000 on its second at a price of 35p, consequently going into profit.
Hugh Southon, 60, the Devon-based editor, is a freelance sports journalist who still writes for the News of the World and has written for other tabloids.
He admitted that some people might “raise eyebrows” at his bringing the arts of popular journalism into play in selling the Gospel, but he said that the 12-page paper, supported by advertising, had received a positive response, even from non-Christians.
