Why do little particles end up inside my glasses from the dishwasher?
When I do a run of dishes in the dishwashers, many times some of my glasses (though not all) end up with little particles of brownish shit things inside them.

I use Cascade powder dishwasher detergent, which has particles as small as the shit that gets in the glasses, but Cascade is all white, and the particles are always brownish/darkish in color.

And even I put water in the glass and swirl it around, the particles don't come off. I have to hand wash it to get them off.

Which also means that, if I don't look, and use a glass for drinking I appear to be safe, since when I finish using the glass, the particles are still on the bottom inside of the glass.

What the fuck?!

I even tried lowering the amount of Cascade I put in the thing, thinking that maybe these are undissolved Cascade particles, but a lower amount doesn't seem to make any diufference.

1. How old is your dishwasher?
Could it be bits of a gasket or something that is degrading and flaking?

8. The water I have is VERY minerally
My toilets also get very dirty in the bowl from mineral deposits from the water coming down the sides. It's awful!! A few days after I clean them they look like it's been months since their last cleaning, even though I use one of those Vanish thingies.

9. Ever considered a water softener?
That might take care of a lot of problems for you.

13. That's it...
We had that problem in Indianapolis a few years ago. No matter WHAT we tried, we couldn't stop the lime or whatever...

You need soft water...

2. Try vacuuming out the inside of your dishwasher?
Perhaps there are bits of food left from other dishes you didn't rinse before putting into the dishwasher that are getting deposited into your cups.

7. Ah! Might there be a filter or something somewhere in there
that I could deal with?

Whenever I look inside, it looks sparkly white with no crap or particles anywhere.

4. Rust in the water?
Try putting some of that blue crap in the little dispenser, forget what it is called, but you can buy it next to the dishwashing stuff.

11. Maybe rust?
Have you tried crumbling the particles, or seeing how hard they are?

15. Yeah, the water's fuckin' hot
dangerously hot, sometimes, I think. :-) But it makes for a nice shower experience.

I don't overload the thing, but I hadn't thought about the silverware thing.

And after reading one or two other posts, it seems that I'm supposed to rinse everything off before putting them in the dishwasher.

Perhaps I will have to try that, too, and see what happens.

I had thought the whole idea of a dishwasher was to have the machine wash the dishes, not to have me wash them first, and THEN let the machine wash them.

16. adding vinegar to the wash water should dissolve a lot...
... of the hard water deposits.

Iron in the water could color the deposits.

19. Good suggestion - how can I do that?
Just pour some into the bottom of the dishwasher before starting it up?

17. run Lime Away through the dishwasher
It definitely helps. You can also buy special dishwasher cleaning stuff, but it costs more.
