So, Are the Appalachian Mountains: App-uh-lay-shen or App-uh-latch-in?
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 11:25 PM by Sandpiper
When I lived in the midwest, they were the former. Then I moved to western North Carolina and they became the latter.

At first, I thought it was just a case of the southerners mangling the language, but then I found out that the range was named for the Appalachee (pronounced like Apache) Indians.

So, I decided the southerners must be right about this one.

The dictionary lists both as correct.

So, which way do you pronounce them?

1. App-uh-latch-in.
That's the way I've always heard it pronounced.
If someone around here pronounces it the other way you know they aren't native.

3. If someone was to visit Appalachian State University
And refer to it as App-uh-lay-shen State, they'd get laughed right off of campus.

2. App-uh-lay-shen
That's the way I've always pronounced them, not that that means it's right or anything!

4. In VA it's App-uh-lay-chen.
That's how I still say it though who knows if it's correct.

7. The former, if you are a southerner.
At least that's how we say it down here in Miss-sippi.
