Pet peeve: The increased use of the term 'treasure'
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 02:43 PM by Richardo
...when referring to money.

e.g.: "The U.S. is spending its blood and treasure in Iraq." :puke:

It sounds so melodramatic - like a bad Clive Cussler novel or some overwrought Victorian bodice-ripper.

I don't know why but it bugs the shit out of me. That is all. Now I have to spend some of my treasure paying the bills. :eyes:

Anyone else?

2. Better than "cake"
My friend used to allways refer to money as "cake", drove me crazy.

3. Ancient.
The term has historical roots in its reference to the resources of a nation -- or in the old days, a duchy or kingdom or city-state.

Therefore, technically, the term "treasure" correctly refers to the nation' wealth, taken from taxpayers, being squandered by the military/industrial theofascist entity that is now trying to conquer the world.

4. Historically based, but it comes off as affected, pretentious bullshit.
It may be historically correct, but it hits my ears like Montgomery Burns sending a package via "aeromail on the next autogyro to the Persian consulate in Siam."

It just grates - that's what makes it a pet peeve.

5. I hadn't even noticed it.
It seems stupid to me... what's wrong with funds? Financial resources?

But... treasure? Really? Journalists are using that? Sorry, but I picture a chest full of coins and jewelry when I read that word.

..."Iraq" and "war".

That's 'blood and treasure' as a phrase. Overwrought Victorian writing, I tell ya!

7. I like it b/c it speaks to fundamentalist Christians
They're big on talking about stewardship of "time and treasure".

Yeah, it sounds pretentious and Victorian and overwrought, but if it perks up the ideas of some Fundies, I'm for it
