I'm a big fan of the series Firefly. It's a must see, a well crafted, realistic vision of the future. The series was killed by Fox, they failed to realize it's potential.

One reason I regard it so highly is that my mother HATES sci-fi, and has had to endure the fanboyesque excitement my brother, father and I possess. Yet for some reason she absolutely loves Firefly, the characters, the settings, the storytelling, humor, etc.
