The disadvantages of having a Giant Hairy Pussy (w/pics)
cat, that is. ;-) My maine Coon Oberon is a big boy-and still growing! Here he is, side by side with my average sized cat, Puck:

He’s taken to leaping onto my lap while I’m working on the computer-ow,ow,ow,ow,OW!!! Nails like talons-and even when they’re cut, they feel more like sharp dog claws than anything belonging to a domestic cat.

Then there’s the shedding; it’s happening right now. In the winter, Oberon looks like this:

But today he looks like this:

Great tumbleweeds of Obie fur are drifting through the hall, stuck to my clothing, the furniture-it reminds me of when I was a kid and had a COLLIE for goodness sakes! Great gobs of fur come out in handfulls..and the hairballs-OMG. Thankfully they are rare, but when you find one, it looks like he coughed up a squirrel!

Last year the shedding got so bad that I turned him into a shaved pussy:

Did I mention that he’s also a mattress hog?

This week he was after a fly. It’s rather alarming to see a beast that size tearing through the house and over furniture. Most of the time, he miraculously leaves everything intact, but sometimes he pulls the entire tablecloth off the dining room table-along with everything else!

“Where is it? I’m gonna git it”!!

But despite those drawbacks, there’s few things like spooning with your giant hairy pussy on a winter night, or hearing his tiger-like purr when he headbutts you in the morning. I can always see him waiting by the door when I pull into the driveway, and he rubs against me, waving his huge plume like tail when I step inside.

I thought a lot about him today, because today is his BIRTHDAY! He’s two years old! He spent the morning and afternoon playing with the foster kitten (who is also turning into a giant not-as-hairy pussy; he’s very large for his age) They play well together:

And the kitten obviously think he’s the bees knees!

Happy Birthday Oberon!

18. It usually isn't the dander
but their spit and since they clean themselves alot, lots of spit. There are products sold that can't be wiped on or even water that dilutes it. Some who have cat allergies have been able to live with their cat.

He is one big beautiful beast!

46. I was about to point out the same thing...
Siberians have about the same size and furriness quotient as Coonies, but, because they lack a certain enzyme in their saliva, they are hypo-allergenic. Most people who are allergic to cats (even normal-sized shorthairs) can co-exist just fine with Siberians.

14. Goodness those are beautiful cats!
I have always thought that Maine Coon's were the prettiest and have always thought I would like to have one but since the only cats I can have are barn cats I would NOT want to deal with that kind of tangled up fur!

Lovely pictures.

I just came home from the farm. I got sleepy after lunch and laid down on an old loveseat I have out there with a sleeping bag (It is freaking cold today} and there is nothing like waking up with three cats tucked against you inside a sleeping bag purring away.

15. I grew up with a long haired cat
Not quite as thick and furry as yours but enough that looking at some of your pictures immediately brings back memories of the vast amounts of shedded cat hair EVERYWHERE around the house. I've since long decided that if I was ever to get a cat myself, it'd have the shortest hair I could find without actually going for the hairless variety which I don't car for.

19. Well Lorien, You have created another classic kitty thread! I had to
Edited on Sat Apr-30-05 07:46 PM by BrklynLiberal
bookmark it, and send it to many friends who aren't even DUers but are fans of Oberon and Puck, and your foster kitten. (I must confess that I have created many DU kitty-thread fans out there in the non-DU world...)
Each picture is a story unto itself. Oberon is a particularly photogenic kitty...he seems to know just how to look into the lens, and sort of "smile" when appropriate. Puck seems like the perfect straight-cat for his routine.
I am so happy to see how well that "hideous" little foster kitty seems to be doing. Are you actually going to be able to let him go? I sort of hope not, as I want to watch his progress to swan as he grows, having seen his ugly duckling days.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OBERON!
Here's to many, many more years of catnip, flies to chase, birds to "chirp" at, feline friends to roll around with, beds to hog, bits of lint to chase around the house, and cold winters to keep Mommy warm at night.

For more pics, Obie’s Catster page is www.catster.com/?100240 -the rest of my guys have pages that are linked to his page -except the foster kitten; man, he’s tough to take photos of! He’s less “goblin like” these days, but he’s turned into a perpetual motion machine!

This is the best I could do:

they stay inside, and i don't want them having to put up with getting their nails done.

& as brief as possible, but i'm calling you out.

declawing is barbaric. no ethical vet will perform that mutilation anymore. you need a different vet, as the 1 you have shd have seriously counseled you about your responsibilities & the mechanix of this cruel operation.

in declawing, the 1st joint of each toe is surgically removed. consider what you'd feel like if someone arbitrarily decided to lop the end off each of your fingers. how long wd it take before the agony faded? your cat had to scratch in a litter box w/raw wounds on its paw tips from an amputation you had performed merely for your convenience.

if you don't want to deal w/claws, buy a snake. but, PLEASE, i implore you, think before you subject any further animals to this torture.

i have no wish to offend you & doubt you knowingly hurt your animal. i posted more to educate other DUers in the horror of this practice than to publicly shame you. your vet is unethical for not informing you. you really need to switch vets, & 1 of my 1st test questions to a prospective new vet is "do you declaw?" if i get an affirmative, they get a serious ass-chewing & none of my business.

39. Oberon's younger brother is up for adoption:
his name is Hobson. He's a Grand Champion showkitty:

Their breeders have only 2 litters a year. I think they thought Hobson would enjoy the life of a studcat-but he does not (he wants to be with people all the time, and stud cats need a room of their own). So they're looking for a loving home for him. I've met him-he's a WONDERFUL kitty.

Thanks for sharing the pics. It's refreshing to see that my cats aren't the only ones who play in the bathtub. Still don't get that... I just have to keep repeating to myself that three cats are enough. Once my older two have passed on, then we'll consider another. Otherwise the husband will lose his space in the bed! :D

61. Wow! He's very handsome
I wish I could get another cat, because I want one just like him now.

And it's so much fun to watch bigger cats wrestle with kittens. My parents swore Monty (my avatar) was hurting Chloe when she was a kitten, because she'd yelp. But it was a ploy to get him to stop so she could jump on him.

I can't imagine those claws though. I trim my kitties claws regularly, so they never accidentally scratch me. But a big ol' boy like that, OUCH!

And I hope he's having a wonderful happy birthday!!

67. As long as they're well clipped
they leave bruises instead of gouges. I've had many more scratches from the pin like nails of kittens than from Oberon-he's only drawn blood once 9and that was an accident). MCs are one of the most gentle breeds out there, so they very rarely use their claws.

BTW-did you see Oberon's younger brother, who is up for adoption? I think I posted his pic in #39.

76. Lol! Actually I got lucky with all three
After a week or two, they all got along quite well. I think it helped that Miro is so old and mellow (16), and that Oberon is only five months older than Puck.

Trimming a kitty like Oberon is tough-he always wants to play with the scissors! I had it done professionally once, but they shaved half his tail and I really didn't like that. Plus I think it was VERY stressful for the big guy. Now I just try to brush him daily, which he seems to enjoy. :-)

96. The little one is a foster kitty
He went to another foster home with LOTS of other kittens last night because he wasn't quite "getting' the litterbox, wouldn't be weaned, and was playing too rough. All of these things are things kittens learn from their moms or siblings-so he was at a real disadvantage. The new "mom" paired him with another bottle baby who had no mother or siblings:

They took to each other right away-even settled down for a nap as soon as they were put in the carrier together:

Only really sad part is is that Oberon has been looking for him all morning, making sad little "c'mere" trills. Poor guy! He no longer has his little shadow. :-(

113. I know-I really miss the little guy
and hearing Obie calling for him all day is heartbreaking! But it really is for the best. Hard to have a housecat who just squats and pees whenever-and wherever- the urge hits him. With all of his new buddies, he'll learn by example pretty quickly (TEN kittens-but only Harrison-the one in the photo-is his age). I'll help with adopting him out in six weeks-hopefully with Harrison, because they seemed to have an instant bond. I'll be getting more bottle babies in the future, though!

90. What a coincidence.
Our first cat after getting married was named Oberon.
He was just a regular carrot-topped alley cat who ran away from home one day and we never saw again. It was even more upsetting since he never gave an indication he was unhappy.

I had for awhile a habit of naming pets after astronomical objects, particular in Oberon's case, planetary moons.
So I'd be curious to know how you decided on the name for your Oberon?

91. I always liked Shakespeare
and "a midsummer night's dream" is probably my favorite. I looked at photos of Oberon's parent's and grandparent's to get an idea of what he would look like. They were all very regal, with an almost otherworldly look to them (those unusual copper eyes). So I named him after the king of the fairies. Puck was taken in a few months later, and was so impish that he naturally became "Puck"-a few months after that I found out that Puck was a she-but the name stuck anyway.

So sorry to here about the loss of your kitty. He could have been picked up by someone who thought he was a stray. :-(

yeah, the tail looks like Norwegian forest cat (rounded on the end). MCs have long fur mostly on their ruffs, belly, tail, and britches, while Norwegian's have it pretty much everywhere-that's the easiest way to tell.

Outside of petfinder, breeders often offer up adult MCs for adoption. Best to do a Google search for breeders in you area, then just call them to find out what they have.

I've had mine almost since they were introduced in this country-so that's a few years. I use to buy a new vacuum every year or so because I burned them out-three cats, a leaky old house that seems to suck the dust into it, and my very long blond hair seemed to overwork the motors. The Dyson hasn't lost a bit of suction-same as the day it came out of the box. Costco now sells them for far less than I paid for mine a few years ago. It's money well spent, IMHO.
