Today I went to the Jackie Kennedy exhibit...
My second time, but I wanted to see it again before it closed. My love of fashion in politics in one place!

I did notice that she was the same size as I am. I am actually having some dresses made in that very chic 1960's style.

It was also nice to see reminders that we were once respected in the world.

1. Where is the exhibit? I would love to go!
What size was she? I just bought my Jackie doll the very outfit in that picture! LOL!

3. It is in Chicago.

She was a couture size 14 in the 60's, which means in modern terms, she was about a size 4-6. Not that she actually had to go into a store and choose a size...they were all made for her. Something that I am certainly wanting to have done because of the horrid invasion of Paris Hilton wannabe clothes everywhere. I know someone who is an amazing seamstress. I want to have the pink dress I posted made in Navy blue without the bow.

Since the clothes would fit me so well, I wonder if the Kennedy family would perhaps let me borrow them:P. For just a little while, lol.

She was so elegant. I think the exhibition is slowly moving around the country. I hope you can see it sometime!

6. That conversion of size is tricky sometimes
Edited on Thu May-05-05 11:46 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
I remember being so pissed off when Liz Hurley said that if she were has fat as Marilyn Monroe (who wore a 16 in those old measurements) she'd have killed herself. Idiot.

"I've always thought Marilyn Monroe looked fabulous, but I'd kill myself if I was that fat,'' Hurley told Allure magazine in an amazingly tactless moment . . . "I went to see her clothes in the exhibition, and I wanted to take a tape measure and measure what her hips were. (laughter) She was very big

7. Oh yeah...

I remember that:eyes:

MM was voluptuous, but only a crazy person would translate that into "fat".

I was shopping for shoes a few months back, and I was so used to European sizing(I do lots of online shopping), I automatically said I wanted a size 36/37. You should have seen the look on the gal's face, lol. I had to correct myself very quickly and say 7:)

8. I thought i remember it being said she was an eight in contemporary size!
She was a fairly tall girl as I recall, at least 5'7, and relatively large boned. She hated her hands , which were large and her hips because she was fairly flatchested and had a hard time balancing things out, a problem I am very familiar with! I am 5'6 and built similarly so I would think a 6 was possible but ,due to her bone structure not a four.I sometimes can wear a four but I have smaller bones. Her shoulders alone would have ruled out a four! JMHO!

10. It depends on the cut.
Edited on Fri May-06-05 12:03 AM by Sannum
I can wear anything from a 2 to an 8, but it all depends on how it is cut. I have had to talk friends down from nervous breakdowns because they can't fit into a certain size 4 because of the way something is designed. My favorite "little black dress" is a size 10 because it is an unusually cut empire waist, while most of my pants are a size 4 and everything else is 2, 4, or XS...

The fact that people freak out about sizes is just strange to me. Everything is different depending on designer, cut, and fabric.

12. I'm built just like her, except I have small hands!
I'm 5'7', 34B. I ride, look good in tall boots and breeches, and I like a simple, clean cut to my clothes. Nothing fussy. No prints or patterns. If I'm not dressed to ride I don't mind getting dressed up, but the clothes MUST be classic.

She was a dream woman. So smart and worldly. :)

5. There's a Jackie exhibition in Chicago, Im not sure that's the one
the OP is talking about. It closes on Sunday. I'm not much of a Camelot fan, but I saw it and it was pretty interesting. Also, comparing Jackie O, the epitome of taste and grace to Laura pretty much puts everything in perspective.

9. Oh! I love her style + she was an equestrianne like me!
Edited on Thu May-05-05 11:55 PM by CottonBear
I wish I had had enough money to bid on the saddles (probably English or maybe French Hermes) and stable blankets and tack trunks in the recent auction of her belongings.

She was so elegant and stylish and private. On top of it all she spoke perfect French and knew all about art and architectural history (my loves).

I just want a strand of real pearls and I'll be happy. I just borrow my Mom's pearls on occasion for events and photos. So elegant.

:)

edit: I am a modern size eight and if I lose 10-20 lbs, a size six.
Jackie and I both have long narrow feet: 9 1/2 - 10 N. Perfect for Italian and French couture footwear!

11. She wore fake pearls...
I read it in one of my books about her, lol. I found a replica of her three strand necklace at Erwin Pearl. I bought it late last year.

I find her to be just an icon of grace and style. Maybe because so many celebrities these days say and show too much.

One of my wishes is to speak perfect french....

13. Fake pearls are so sensible at the stables!

I want to speak French as well. I've had a year of Latin, four years of Spanish and and a continuing ed. course in German but French still eludes me. I'm going to take a conversational French class this year.

"I find her to be just an icon of grace and style. Maybe because so many celebrities these days say and show too much." That's why she was perfect. She was so very private and elegant.
