Hey who here left a small town right after High School?
What was it like? Where did you go? Where did you come from? Was it worth it?

1. definitely worth it
though i think i was luckier than most small town kids, in that i was close to major cities, and my town was pretty big for a small town, with a population of 10,000

it was only an hour from milwaukee and 90 minutes from chicago, and i spent a lot of weekends in highschool driving to both. as soon as i graduated (which i did early) i moved up here and have been here since...took a year off, worked for this americorps program in the city, then went to school...but now i'm taking more time off to move to san francisco, for the hell of it.

we'll see what happens...i am just a city kid at heart

2. I did.
Went straight to college in the closest city, about an hour away. Because I grew up on a farm, money was always a problem. Transferred after first year, graduated with a degree in Music Ed., have been teaching Music ever since.

I came from South Eastern Illinois, where there is nothing but farms, coal, a little bit of oil, and uh, oh yeah, FREEPERS! And I mean freepers with Toby Keith hats and gun racks on each giant gas (or diesel) hogging truck.

Yes, oh yes, was it worth it! :)

3. i went from howard OH pop 1000 to baltimore MD pop 600k
can't say it was a huge culture shock as i was raised most of my younger years in washington DC, moved to OH then got the fuck out of there as soon as i could...

would NEVER want to live in a small town again.

4. I was fortunate. I grew up in progressive Marin Ctouny, Ca
The most progressive county and the freakin' best school system outside of New York. At one time our education system in CA was the best, bar none. We actually learned stuff., It's late, but I will come back to this thread because it grieves me what has happened to |E|D|UCAT|I|O|N. We are doing a GREAT disservice to our children.

5. I went from Saucier, MS, to Dallas, Texas. Dallas seemed liberal,
in comparison.

I didn't go straight out of high school, though. I went to a nearby junior college two years, while working at Domino's Pizza.
