Is money an acceptable gift for an SO?
I have this friend (for convenience sake, let's call him Anwar D. Eastman) whose SO's birthday is coming up. He had a gift in mind for her, but she asked for money instead so she could buy clothes for a new job. Should Anwar go ahead and get her the gift he had in mind, or heed her wishes?

1. Best of both worlds - a gift card to a clothes store she likes
QED.

3. In the situation you described, yes
He could always go shopping with her and help select the clothes. This way he would be sure that he was getting her what she needs/wants.
The purpose of a gift is to please the recipient. Giving her something she doesn't want when she really needs something else is dumb.

8. If that is what she asked for, then I don't have a problem with it.
Usually money is kind of impersonal, but when I ask for money, that is what I want.

9. Give her the cash!
For years now, my dad has been giving my mom cash in a card as a xmas gift. My mom then goes to all of the after-xmas sales and goes nuts. She loves it, and she gets exactly what she wants at a better price. Win-win.
