common law. . .more than married. Five years together is far longer than a lot of marriages.

Actually have no clue what constitutes common law marriage in the Commonwealth. I know your divorce procedures take a lot longer than they do here in most cases.

In RI common law is really obtuse. I asked a lawyer about it after hearing all sorts of rumors about it being cohabitation for 3 months , 3 years. . .etc. He said it's very vague and that all you had to prove was that there was a "sincere intent to commit". Inquiring for some friends who were trying to get a mortgage and weren't married, I said, "so having four kids together would count?" He said. . . "ahhh yeah."
