I have to tell you something....
I promised myself that I wouldn't use the lounge to air my personal problems, but I've left myself little choice.

I'm an alcoholic. <----- you have no idea what it took for me to type that, considering I won't talk at meetings :)

I've missed everyone here and want to come back and post, but I can't do that without at least providing some explanation, so now you know. I don't know how much I'll be here, especially in the evenings, but it was nice to post a thread last night. This one isn't so nice - In fact, it's probably one of the most embarrassing moments.

I've been blessed with two beautiful daughters for whom I would die. So, I guess living for them wouldn't be such a bad idea either.

Thanks for reading this - :hi:

5. One step at a time JJ
You just made one of the biggest leaps you will ever have to take.

Next step, share at a meeting. You'll be amazed at how liberating it will be, and you will find some great support in both RL and DU.

Thinking healing vibes for you and yours.

8. Don't be ashamed of it JimmyJazz
What you posted is a huge step for yourself. I've dealt with a few different addictions, and it is just part of life.
Just go "one day at a time" and take it easy. I am guessing that you are going in that direction. Either way, just don't mindfuck yourself over things.

19. Not everybody can go that route.
The strength to face your demons has to come from within. Some people find that strength with the help of others, some through faith, some through sheer stubbornness. But the strength is inside you. You just need to discover it, by whatever means you can. :)

27. Some one I care for very much has had addiction issues for 25 years.
He hates meetings too and eventually relapsed after 8 sober years. He has found a lot of peace though in therapy and Buddhism which has done wonders within the past year. I don't think there necessarily has to be "one way", but keeping a continuous level of consciousness about everything and learning to allow yourself to feel again (even the pain, perhaps especially the pain).

Again, I wish you nothing but the best.

202. My meetings helped me to save my life.
So, I have warm fuzzy safe feelings for 12 step meetings. My life is no longer insane.

I hope you give the meetings a fair shake. And actually, you just performed the hardest part of starting the healing process here with people you probably feel safer with than your 12 step folks.

As an aside, is there a 12 step group on this forum. That would seem to be a nice compromise.

Lastly, congratulations, this is courageous and necessary. Hello JimmyJazz.

213. Actually, I'm not sure there is but there should be, at least AA
But there are about a half dozen other spring off organizations for other equally devestating addictions. The programs are very similar because no matter the addiction of choice, similar thought processes go into to gear and certain ways of healing apply to all.

luckily, with the wisdom you apparently have, a disease you're willing to confront head on and deal with.

The weak are those who succomb. The oh-so-strong are those like you who have come forward to deal with their issues head on.

Congratulations!

71. We all have our problems.
That just makes us human. My problem is that I have struggled w/ an eating disorder on and off since the age of 13. I have gone years w/o purging, then one day life will be too stressful (you get the picture and it's never pretty).
I know that you just have to fight it one day at a time. Just know that there are people here who are fighting similar demons too.
And I still enjoy reading your posts!

74. Good on ya!
Admitting you have a problem is a great first step, coming to terms with this disease is the second step. Just be careful of those meetings. I've seen people get very bizarre when they attended them. Like sniffa said previously, it can be very cultish. So go with an open mind and heart.

The meetings are a little scary, but since I just told 50,000 people my problem, I should be able to handle a couple dozen people at a meeting :)

91. You'll do fine.
I went to a couple of open meetings in support of a friend who had been going to them. She wanted to share that part of her life with me so I could better understand what she was going thru. You only had to speak if you felt comfortable doing that. She came out of it unscathed, but for a while, it looked like she might go down the fundie path. Fortunately she saw the light and came back to us. Nowaways, she still doesn't drink and no longer needs the meetings to keep her away from the 'demon' alcohol.

Just be true to your inner-self and you will be just fine.

121. yo girl
glad to see ya! I hope you are having an excellent Monday.

My Grampa quit for my mom and his wife while I was in utero. My mom had her dad sober for the last 11 years of his life, and my sister, brother and I never saw grampa drunk. My mom had probably never seen him sober until she was 27. And his wife, who issued the edict ("It's me or the booze-decide which you want more.") stuck with him forever. :)

One Story, Many Happy Endings.

134. Hey JJ
It might be a cliche, but there's a lot of truth in the saying about the first step is admitting you have a problem. There's no shame in being honest.

I do hope you find the courage and strength to conquer this. There's nothing to be embarrassed about.

And I suggest printing this thread out (after everybody gets a chance to reply) and hanging it up somewhere where you can see it everyday to remind you that you are not alone.

Good luck.

Here is a site with input on alternatives to AA. Many groups have online support. See this link for several links: http://www.smartrecovery.org/links.htm

Also, I recommend the book The Truth About Addiction and Recovery. Other good books listed here: http://www.moderation.org/books.shtml

172. Best advice I can give is
Make sobriety your top priority, and take the rest of it one day at a time, even if it's really more like one minute at a time.

Keep asking yoursef, "What is the next right thing to do?"

Soon you are stringing together a few good hours, then you are stringing together a few good days, and then, before you know it, you have a few good weeks and months behind you. Then you start to get some real-world benefits, as your friends and family realize that you can be trusted, and are really there for them.

At least that was my experience, and although I sometimes miss the idea of lounging around with a nice glass of wine, sparkling water with some juice in it is just as good, if not better.

Hang in there, and keep making it your top priority, whether or not you decide on AA or any other program. Keep trying. Keep remembering your priority, and keep thinking of why you are doing this.
