At which point I hung up.

If the call was really important they wouldn't call to put me on hold.

Most often it's bill collectors or telemarketers.

5. If I'm not expecting a call

I'll just put the phone down (not hang up, but just set it down) and walk away. Then I listen for the voice of the telemarketer talking into the phone.

that there isn't some way to leave a hyper-rude message when you get the recording asking you to "please hold for the first available representative:......
