Omar Sharif is excellent as an old man running a small store in a working-class Paris neighborhood. He befriends a teenage Jewish orphan and shows him what matters in life with a few deft masterstrokes. The adolescent is into prostitutes, and much amusement is derived watching him try to buy their services. But the bond that grows up between the two is the real point of the movie, and it's superbly done. Sharif outdoes himself with this one. French with subtitles.
Gotta add: the old man talks the kid into feeding his father cat food to save money. It's hilarious. But there's an ugly tone to the young boy's relationship with his father.
