Poll question: "For Dummies" (tm) books...
e.g. "Fedora for Dummies", "Dating for dummies", "bankruptcy for dummies", "Windows for dummies", "sex for dummies", "Microsoft office for dummies", and most embarrassingly "Macintosh for Dummies".

1. I have a couple of these
They can be pretty handy sometimes. The idea is to give you a friendly introduction to an activity or topic that you know absolutely nothing about.

Texas Hold 'Em for Dummies would be a great idea, if it isn't out yet. I've played poker since I was a kid, but never Hold 'Em.

2. When you're brand new to a particular subject,
they can really come in handy. "Chess for Dummies" helped me better understand the game.

doing the "Bibles" and "Secrets" books, though. As for the Dummies books, it all depends on the author - some are for shit, others are great. And yes, when Pregnancy for Dummies came out, there were many jokes in the office about the wisdom of publishing it ;-)

12. Some are good, some are ridiculous
"C For Dummies" was incredibly useful in starting me off when I was learning to program. I still use "JavaScript For Dummies" for my website occasionally. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to read a book by someone who's only read "Writing For Dummies" and if you are reading "Sex For Dummies," you probably shouldn't be having any.

13. I would never buy a book that implied that I was a
"Dummy," or worse, "Complete Idiot."

What's next, "(Subject) For Irredeemably Moronic Stupid Hopeless Loser Dickheads Who Probably Are Too Goddamn Dumb To Understand Even If They Read This Book?"

Those should be big sellers, if history is any indication.
