Someone PLEASE give Tom Cruise a giant can of "SHUT THE F*CK UP!!"
Dear Tom:

You are not a doctor, you're some dumbass guy who happened to luck out with a good face & body and managed to parlay it into a success film career. Although I heartily agree that doctors are too quick to sometimes prescribe mood-altering drugs, YOU'RE NOT A FUCKING DOCTOR AND SCIENTOLOGY IS A DUMBASS CULT MADE UP OF A GUY WHO HAD A BET THAT HE COULD SUCKER IDIOTS LIKE YOU INTO A MADE UP RELIGION.

Cruise Launches War on Psychiatrists

Tom Cruise has declared a public war on psychiatrists because he fears the "pseudo-science" has led to a drug-fuelled crisis for today's children. The movie hunk was diagnosed as dyslexic when he was just seven, and doctors suggested he should take drugs to control his learning problems. Memories of that part of his childhood fuelled Cruise to seek alternative ways of overcoming his dyslexia - a problem that led him to the Church of Scientology's educational programs. Becoming a scientologist in 1984 made the actor look closely at the controversial religion's anti-psychiatry stance, and he has since become a firm believer that the science and the medicating of children is wrong. Speaking exclusively to US news show Access Hollywood as part of a week-long special about his scientology beliefs, the movie hunk declares, "I'm going right after psychiatry and these false labels and this pseudo-science. I was diagnosed as dyslexic; I had a lot of energy as a child. They wanted to put me on drugs... Never did; my mother said no, absolutely not, no way and I'm thankful. Had I been put on those drugs, I never would be here today... I never would have had the career that I'm having. Am I making people aware of it by discussing it openly and saying what a fraud psychiatry is? You bet I am. I feel a responsibility because I care..." The actor also maintains that poor results in education in America can be blamed on mind-altering drugs that are given to children. He adds, "SAT (exam) scores have gone right down the toilet. The parents are blaming the teachers, the teachers are blaming the parents and the psychs are putting everyone on drugs."

I am so glad that actors are so qualified to speak out on every topic. :eyes:

30. Ahhh.
It's so cute that he can use a big word like pseudoscience, but if he really knew what it meant, then it would turn his stomach to even think about Dianetics.

Scientology is the epitome of pseudoscience.

2. um. I'm not a scientologist, but I kinda agree with him.
the part about kids being overmedicated at least. adults too.

I think we americans seek a medication to take care of far too many issues that could best be dealt with other ways. There are, of course, situations where meds are not only needed, but critical, but when I tell my dr. that I don't EVER want to take an anti-depressant unless I am suicidal (history of mental illness in my family, anti-depressants are contra-indicated) and he prescribes Wellbutrin when I ask him about quitting smoking? I got even more pissed when he tried to tell me it wasn't an anti-depressant.

sorry.

I think Tom has gone over the edge, but I think he's only a bit off the target on this one.

6. But the difference between us and Tom Cruise...
..is that Tom Cruise is advocating Scientology as the solution instead of doctors/pills. Everything that Tom does or says can pretty be directly related to his immersion into the cult of Scientology. IT was only earlier this week that he suggested that Brooke Shields should have consulted scientologists instead of a doctor for her post-partum depression.

IT's a cult Tom and from what I've read and heard from those who are ex-scientologists, it's a very expsensive & invasive cult.

Personally, after watching Super Size Me last night, these people don't need a doctor, pills OR scientology - what they need is a nutritionist that can help plan out eating & excercise plans!

7. But see Tom isn't saying that for any reason other than he's been told
to say it by a group that is against any and every mental health profession that is not scientology. He doesn't say it because he reached the conclusion after research, he's saying it because he was told by scientology that "psychs" are evil and anything and everything they could ever possibly suggest is also evil.

He's way off base because he is not speaking based on rational thought but on what someone else told him to think.

5. Hehehe, psychology is "pseudo-science" but Scientology which
has never undergone any kind of impartial study (or study of any kind not conducted by scientologists) is good "tech".

He's even throwing in the scientology jargo such as "the psychs".

Come on Tom, quit listening to David Miscavige and his cadre of "Sea Org" militants and rejoin the real world.

Or you could just go read www.clambake.org and try some individual thought for a change.

32. You don't even need to study it.
It bills itself as the "science of religion." The "religion" part of that definition makes it inherently untestable, and because it masquerades as science (which is by it's very nature a method of testing/falsification of claims), that makes it pseudoscience.

It is all semantic.

17. Extensive and very expensive "auditing," of course.
If people want to practice scientology as their religion of choice, fine by me. But I don't want Tom Cruise and his church using whatever political clout they have to limit my health care choices, anymore than I want Jerry Falwell and his church dictating my health care choices.

End of mini-rant.

Nice. (And if you're familiar with scientology, you kow that psychiatry _does_ compete with the services they sell.) Thanks, Tom, but I'll just continue making my own health care decisions without your expert guidance.

While the religion of Tom Cruise and John Travolta has been getting some tough press in recent days, it’s also been lauded by President Bush’s brother.

Florida Governor Jeb Bush raised eyebrows among the critics of the sometimes controversial religion recently when he honored Scientology volunteers who helped victims of hurricanes in his state.
