13 - the Movie
Edited on Fri May-27-05 10:33 AM by Wickerman
This movie has some great reviews. I have 13 year olds in the house. Anyone seen it? Will it give me any insights into what they deal with as young girls?

Or, will I just seem like a sad old pervert when I rent it from the 17 year old gal at the video store?

Review at NetFlix

Thirteen-year-old Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) is a good girl. She's smart, gets along with her mother (Holly Hunter) and is never any trouble. But then she befriends Evie (played by Nikki Reed, who co-wrote the movie), a gorgeous and popular classmate who teaches Tracy to let loose and introduces her to the beguiling world of sex, alcohol, drugs and self-mutilation -- much to the horror of Tracy's friends, relatives and, most of all, her mother.

its emotional, heart felt, and fells like real life. I got many insights into the relationship between my mom and younger sister. Highly recommended from me!

2. Hmmmmm - haven't seen it
Sex drugs alcohol and self-mutilation? Hopefully the movie teaches a good lesson because that sounds pretty heavy duty. Perhaps you should ask mom about allowing the 13 year olds to watch - I am a mother of a soon-to-be 13 year old.

I'll have to check out further reviews on this one. :hi:

7. One of the 13 year olds has already seen it
and was appalled that I wanted to watch it. Afraid I would learn too much about her and her friends. :D

I wasn't actually considering doing a family viewing.

The other 13 year old - I'm guessing she hasn't seen it.

What would be your opinion as a mother of a soon to be 13 yr old?

8. I'd want to see it first without her - then decide
That's my suggestion. I may watch it now, I've read a few other reviews and it looks interesting :hi:

3. You won't come off as a pervert
It touches up on a lot of teen issues and mother/teen daughter relationship issues and does it well.

Oh and the mom is SMOKIN' in this film. (well I think so anyway)

4. You may never let your kids out of the house again after seeing it :)
Seriously. I mean . . . .YIPES. I was happy I wasn't a parent while watching it.

BUT, that said, it's a very good film, and the behaviour of the youngsters is very realistic (hell a 13 year old girl helped write the thing if I'm not mistaken). You will notice very real interactions (when the two main characters meet for the first time, pay attention to the way the check each other out, etc., I thought the director did a great job of capturing the whole mental process).

Excellent film though.

5. it's a good film
i think everyone with a pre-teen + daughter should see it. Even if they're not like the girls in the movie, they know some who are. It's a bit shocking so beware.

6. I thought Evan Rachel Wood deserved an oscar nom over that Whale Rider gal
She pulled off an amazing performance in that movie. Evan Rachel Wood did get a golden globe nomination (the Whale Rider gal didn't) but it switched at Oscars. Although Whale Rider was a nice movie there was something bland about the performance compared to what Wood did in "thirteen"

9. Good movie
We were going through a rough time with our daughter when it came out. My wife left the theater in tears. It can be a pretty rough movie and may seem over the top at times. I wouldn't let a 13 year old watch it.
