It's the kind of patriotism that Samuel Johnson spoke of when he said that "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." It's the kind of patriotism that demands that you identify with a flawed leader and makes you support him unequivocally.

I find it interesting that they bring it up at all. They certainly are aware of it. I have happened to become quite a particular bête noire within their circles.

Some have expressed some ambivalence that casting aspersions on me, while being fully conscious of my racial background, also makes them appear to have racist tendencies.

Others have gone out and made outright racists statements, some without rebuttal.

I can only believe that their regressive politics encourages those that posess that modicum of ambivalence gives them carte blanche to excuse those statements offhandedly and to stomach that kind of hypocrisy, especially if they do not raise rigorous objections.

Some have even fallen to using the same terminology of civil rights era racists, by calling us "communists" and calling me in particular a "communist supporter". Excuse me, but I didn't know we changed our name to "Communist Underground".

I see the same mindset at work as those who opposed Dr. Martin Luther King and cheered when people like Bull Connor let loose with water cannons and attack dogs on peaceful demostrators.

The mere fact that they despise progressive ideas and any opposition to Bush's policies and illegal war on Iraq is enough to let me know where they stand on many other important issues of justice and equality.

Particularly race matters.
