Finish this sentence: A REAL man...
(I'll go first) ...would never, ever hit a woman. Unless the woman was trying to kill him, or somebody else.

Your turns.

13. fuck chivalry
If you do it beause you think you have to do it because of you're a man, it's bullshit.
Do it because you'd do it for anyone else, not just for women.

27. I Think Chivalry is Misunderstood
It's not about being a man, it's about being a gentleman. It is about having a sense of obligation to serve others, men, women, children, or God's dumb creatures.

Chauvinism is a different story.

36. It reinforces gender roles
I have huge issues with this notion of men having to serve women because they're men- like I said, I have no problems with courtesy, because that's gender nuetral and EVERYONE should be polite to one another. You know, hold the doors open, say please and thank you.
I do not want to have my meal paid for.
I do not need to have the door held open for me just because I'm a chick.
I've deal with men who had the mentality that they HAD to protect me because they were the dood and I was the chick- that shit pisses me off like no other.
Sorry for the rant, but this really irks me.

47. i know what you're saying
but that's not what i meant

i don't do it because i think women can't or shouldn't do it (whatever "it" is)

i do it because i think women are goddesses and deserve to be treated as such...

i would never try to prevent a woman from doing something that men are "supposed" to do though...

i guess it is my own little way of saying "sorry for how badly men have fucked up this planet"

Heck yes, of course.
But I refuse to let men buy things for me just because they feel like they have to. It shifts the power to the man, and I dislike that; a relationship should be 50/50, which is why I always split the bill =)

Not because she is a chick, but as a sign of respect to her station.

That is chivalry.

What you are describing is Chauvinism and that would irk me too.

It is all about the meaning of the act, and that depends on the social contract between you and the other person.

67. It makes me, if you want to know the truth, a guy who
has had his ass kicked more times than he can remember because he could never resist getting between a bully and the bully's victim.

The bullies were always big and strong, and I was always the skinny, brainy, quiet kid. the one they never looked out for. But it didn't matter to me. Some things are worth fighting, and suffering for.

And if you want to equate my post defending poor, shy little elshiva with your asshole bullying behavior, go ahead and do so. It takes not much of a man to pick on a girl. If that makes you feel like more of a man to do so, be my guest.

That would tell me what kind of a man you are.

If you really, truly, feel that it's the same thing for you to pick on a girl, using the kind of vile, ugly language you did, and for me to call you out mano a mano for doing so, then I've just gotten a real insight into your character.

And I'm not sure I like what I see. I thought we were supposed to be a comunity here.

I hope it's important enough that you don't feel any shame for what you did to her. I hope you can sleep tonight with that knowledge.

Were we separated at birth? You just described my dad. He (and my mum - both amazing people in their own rights, btw) never told me I couldn't do something simply because I was a girl. They just wanted me to be happy in what I did/do with my life. FYI, they're both elderly (dad-79, mum-82) and they are the most open minded people I know. And, I take their opinions to heart, because they've been there, done that. Too long a story to get into here. Let's just say, my dad was born & raised in India, met my mother in Korea, got married in Scotland, then immigrated to Canada. Did I mention they are both of Scottish descent? They've travelled the world, as have I and my siblings. We know what it's really like outside of our comfortable North American lifestyle.

75. My parents did raise their voices at each other
but they preferred to call them "spirited discussions". They were both relatively old when they were married. Mum - 30; dad - 27. She was a Canadian nursing sister during the Korean war, dad was an officer in the British army. I think that their age then, and now, has a lot to do with their liberal views. They still have, of course, certain ideas that are generational but for the most part, I have no complaints. They still keep travelling (my mum says we (meaning me and my siblings) better start making more money, because she and dad are going through our "inheritance" as fast as they can <lol>. Case in point, last year they travelled to India for a couple of months. Dad wanted to visit where he grew up. Mum just came back from Winnipeg from her 60th!!! reunion of her nursing class. When I spoke to her on Monday, she complained that those remaining looked old!!?!!. Hello, mum? You ladies are in your 80s. That's the sort of parents I have.

about 10 years ago. Now keep in mind, this woman was brought up a Scotch Baptist. They didn't even dance! So now, they go to the casinos in the lower mainland. Dad gives mum $100, then goes and sits in a comfortable chair and reads while she gambles. To those who might think that my mum doesn't have her own money, that's not true. It's just the way she controls the gambling losses. She's limited herself to $100 a day. They used to go down to the states (they liked Reno) but they have refused to do this for, while I guess, 5 years. Coincidence? I think not.

Least I can do for a woman such as yourself.

Are you comfortable there? Could you use another pillow or two? I could bring them in when I bring the coffee.

44. A REAL man....
Can realize that he was wrong, and offer an apology. A real man does not obsess about what others think of him. A real man can be both tough and gentle. He can change both tires and babies. He is considerate of others, but would kick the asses of those who threatened his family. That's all that comes to mind, at the moment :)

Mrs R. always asks me if I really mind if I pick up those "sanitary supplies" for her when I go to the drugstore.

I don't find it a problem at all. It's just life, and furthermore I do have my "red wings." With Oak Leaf Cluster.

A real man enjoys and benefits from friendships and relationships.

97. A real man stands up and gets counted for what matters.
Be it to defend those that cannot defend themselves, or in assistance to support those that need him to do so.

A real man isn't violent.

A real man knows that he is, indeed, a real man, and doesn't need to show it or be reminded of others of same.

A real man volunteers.

A real man leads by example.

A real man would never drive a Hummer.

98. To Be A Man - By Boston
Since there are so many good answers, I went with song lyrics. :P

Words by Scholz

What does it take to be a man?
What does it take to see
It’s all heart and soul
A gentle hand?
So easy to want and so hard to give
How can you be a man
’till you see beyond the life you live?
Oh, what does it take to be a man?

We can be blind, but a man tries to see
It takes tenderness
For a man to be what he can be
And what does it mean
If you’re weak or strong?
A gentle feelin’
Can make it right or make it wrong
What does it take to be a man?

The will to give and not receive
The strength to say what you believe
The heart to feel what others feel inside
To see what they can see

A man is somethin’ that’s real
It’s not what you are
It’s what you can feel
It can’t be too late
To look through the hate and see
I know that’s what a man can be

Instead of leaving the job of raising them up to the woman who gave birth to them. This includes changing poopy diapers and not pretending to be asleep while the children are babies and crying a lot at night. It also includes doing his share of reading bedtime stories, helping with homework, shuffling them around to doctor's appointments, afterschool activities and college dorms/apartments. You, out there, real men You know what kind of pitiful sub-human I'm posting about.

120. Just for the Record,
Some years ago, one of my neighbors was traveling with his family and was involved in a highway accident. The car rolled over and his family was trapped while the car began to burn. He dragged his wife out of the car, went back pulled one of his children out of the car, now fully engulfed, then went back a third time to rescue the last of his children. The car exploded and he and his second child died in the ensuing explosion.

That is the crucible that defines a real man for me; one who is prepared to give his life for his loved ones. As for the rest, it's just dressing.
