I thought it was dirty, but it won't even play the lens cleaner disc.

1. pitch it
they will charge you more just to open it than a new one will cost

2. They're so cheap these days.
Even though it's wasteful, it's cheaper to get a new one.

6. I gave up and bought a new one...they're cheap as dirt.
I had my old one fixed, once, and it still wouldn't read DVDs right. Didn't even bother taking the old one back to try again.

Bought a 5-disc changer for $150. No worries, since.

8. I hate our disposable society but I bet it will be cheaper
to buy a new one $30-$100 depending on make and sales going on than the cost to repair it. Labor alone for an hour would probably make repairing prohibitive.

Is it an old machine? You might call and check repair prices first.

13. careful with that idea
we had a mayor here in MN that did the same thing with clothes and got busted. She had to resign as mayor and got put into some program instead of jail time or a fine.

Pick up a new one. Don't go too cheap, though, or you won't get decent quality.

I've gotten hooked on the 5 disc players. You can put multiple discs in and scoot around watching what you want.

Check out this beauty:

Sony has a 400 disc player that plays DVD-RW/-R (VR and Video Mode) DVD+RW/+R Playback, SACD Multi-Channel/MP3/CD-R/CD-RW.

Sweet!

I'm hoping to get this for Clausmas.

One other recommendation: Check the remote! I got a new DVD player I really like, except that I hate the remote. I got too used to my old RCA remote, and now the buttons are all in the wrong place. :-)

14. Hubby used to repair electronic stuff on the side
then they closed the one store where he could buy the parts. Can't even get them online anymore. So he says throw it away and buy a new one.

19. We've paid to have one looked at
to determine whether it was worth repairing.

It would've been cheaper to just pitch it in the first place. Pitch it.

26. Been asking myself the same
Actually brought it to my workplace and took it apart to try and see what was wrong. Actually thought I had it (there wasn't enough pressure being put on the DVD from that top plate for the DVD to spin on the platter). But yeah 45 mins into "The Two Towers" and it stops again.
