Mother in law sent my 10 yr old daughter a nasty political email.
Edited on Sun Jun-19-05 06:20 PM by Bouncy Ball
Here it is:

My daughter showed me the forwarded email from her grandmother. Not only was it nasty and inappropriate to send to a 10 year old, but we teach her not to judge people based on their appearance.

I responded to my mother in law:

"This is _________. This forwarded email with horrible pictures of Democratic women bothered _________. It bothered me, too. I think it's inappropriate to send to a 10 year old and we teach her not to judge people based on their appearance. Please do not send her such emails in the future.

Thank you,
______________"

Nice enough? Now we'll see. This is the same woman whom I asked nicely four times to stop sending me stuff like that (I've never sent her political emails) and she wouldn't quit so finally when I got the one about how she wants to shoot Jane Fonda, I blocked her email address. My daughter is her only grandchild, they live far away, and I think grandparents and grandchildren should have communication and a good relationship, if possible, but this is ridiculous. My daughter told me this wasn't the first time, it was just the first one she told me about.

:grr:

Obviously your mother-in-law has no respect for the boundaries you have established. Tell her she'll have to call if she wants to communicate with your daughter.

cut her off at the knees long ago.
I would let your daughter know that you want to know if she gets another note like that.
If that happens, your mother-in-law should be on the family spam list.
End of story. persona on grata.

EDIT: Maybe next time it could be your daughter who writes the note that tells her grandma that it is inappropriate for her to be sending notes of that kind to her. It would indicate that your daughter has the greater maturity, and that your daughter does not want to receive these kinds of notes from her.

16. Honestly, I'm not sure she has friends.
She lives a very isolated life and I've never once heard her mention a friend in the fifteen years I've known her. This is what she does all day: she gets up and makes my father in law his lunch, then cleans up a bit, then she goes to the beach to lay out and tan (despite the fact that she has had three melanomas removed--idiotic), she goes shopping, watches Oprah, sends forwarded emails, makes dinner, eats dinner, blah blah blah. That's her day every day. It's been that way for as long as I've known her.

Once about five years ago, she told me she was so exhausted. I asked her from what. She said just from her life. Um. Yeah. Sounds like a horribly exhausting life.

13. Just to be clear:
this isn't about looks to me. I could give a shit which group has more attractive women or not. That's the point--we don't teach our daughter to think that way and obviously my mother in law does think that way.

Also, we teach her to look at a person's moral compass, their insides, their actions and philosophies. The republican women all have screwy morals, if you can call them morals at all (fuck the poor, fuck women, fuck children, fuck sick people, fuck the troops, fuck Iraqis, etc.), and nasty nasty insides.

Now really if you want to play who has the best looking women AND to boot they don't have criminal records or thoughts we can do that.......from Natalie Portman to Angelia Jolie....and that's just the beginning.

Now then you still haven't responsed to the links I gave you about how the neo-cons did business with the Taliban concerning the Afghan Oil Pipeline.....

He hasn't written me since...

By the way it's one thing to send that shit to someone like me or anyone old enough to really understand but to send it to a 10 year old kid is beyond fucked up...she should be cut off from being near your kid because it is YOUR child and regardless of blood ties she has no right to turn your child into a little hitler youth recruit.

27. You were much more civil than I would have been
If you have already stopped her from sending this type of email to you, then she is not concerned with what you think, IMHO. She would, most likely, care what her son thought of her and her actions though.

Perhaps it is time to get HIM to to address the boundaries of communication with her grandchild. If he makes it clear what HIS family values are, and requests that she respect them or be relegated to a less than desired influence on HIS child, one to be avoided when possible. She will get the message and either change her expressions of this type to your daughter, or she will lose out on the relationship altogether, by her own hand.

In the event that he is not comfortable doing that, then I think you handled it as diplomatically as you could have. Next time, take the gloves off and make sure she understands where the line in the sand is.

Good Luck!

(What a nasty thing to send to a child that is obviously being raised in a Democratic household. Totally unbelievable!)

28. I am going to talk to him about it later tonight and
see how he feels about approaching it if she does this again. He is too interested in keeping the peace and not saying anything sometimes, but this one pissed him off. I just happened to write the email.

It doesn't matter anyway. Even if he sent an email, she would think *I* did. He'd have to call her on the phone and that's what we'll talk about tonight. He did also say if she does it again, her email address will be blocked and she will know she can write our daughter through snail mail.

Why would you want to jeopardize your relationship with your only grandchild, though? Makes no sense.

32. She obviously think you two are doing the wrong thing
that's why she took the chance that your daughter wouldn't tell you about it. Perhaps she feels she missed the boat with her own kids and doesn't want to make the same mistake with her grand daughter. "There's still time to save her" ... know what I mean?

It could even be as simple as trying to get a reaction out of you, couldn't it? She still gets her message to you if your daughter tell you about it. A way to get under your skin, hedging her bets that your husband will be more interested in keeping the peace with her than supporting your anger. Does she know anything about your husbands political leanings at all? Does she think all this "liberal" thinking is your doing and not that he actually thinks that way himself?

35. She's knows he's liberal, ironically she RAISED him to be that way!
She always taught him to think for himself, to question things, to stand up for what's right, she protested the war in Vietnam (before her husband went), etc. She didn't believe in cutting his hair when he was little unless HE wanted it cut, she taught him that the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, that sex and birth are beautiful things, etc.

In other words, she was pretty liberal herself.

Then she decided money is the #1 most important thing in her life. And after 9/11 she got all fundie and freeper-like. She has definitely done a 180 from her younger days.

So yeah, she knows he feels the same way. Honestly I think she just has a nasty streak a mile wide. I never saw it the first few years, but I've been seeing it quite a bit in the last five years or so.

47. That's just mean then
My aunt did the same kind of "turn around" in her later years too. Even though she was never what I would have considered a liberal, she was much more moderate when she was younger. Now, she is just what we call "a mean old bitty". She is faced with her own mortality and is not the spry chick she used to be. The older she gets the more nasty, mean, and manipulative she gets. She is the oldest of five siblings and the last remaining one too. She used to command a great deal of respect in the family. Now she tries to demand it, but it doesn't get her very far. We have almost all written her off as a total loss cause. She will die alone (with only her one child to notice) and lonely because of the choices that she has made.

It's sad really. I watched the progression and it was more than I could stand.

I wish you luck. Be sure to let us know what happens when you talk to your husband. He may hold the key to stopping it. He can hold a mirror for her that you can't.

but if I did have grandchildren, it would practically kill me to see them brought up as neo-con fundies. I would feel that I had failed in my own son's education. I take my political views pretty seriously. However, I would not stoop to personal attacks about the way Ann Coulter looks, or Jeanne Kirkpatrick ot Barbara Bush for that matter. It is about ideals and principles, for one thing, rather than personalities, and for another thing, cheap shots do not make for solid arguments.
edit: not to mention that I would be throwing stones from a glass house.

53. I hope a relationship can survive political squabbles
As one of 14 and 33 grandchildren whose grandparents were 550 and 1500 miles away I am not sure what a relationship to a grandparent/grandchild should be like. I remember following the 1972 Presidential election at the age of 10. First I was for McGovern (because I saw alot of his yard signs around town). Then I saw him on TV saying that the space program was a waste of money. That was kicking my sacred cow, so I became a Nixon fan.

Anyway, I am not sure it would bother me to talk politics with my grandparents even at the age of ten. I sure followed it, even if my understanding was not very sophisticated.

What exactly is she hoping to accomplish by sending it to a 10-year-old? She likely isn't all THAT into politics, but even if she is does this MIL think she's going to turn your daughter into some Hitler Youth? Especially when she knows your political leanings, it is not only inappropriate but just plain tacky as well.

30. Tell Grandma to either stop with the emails or her address will be blocked
Or you could do what I did when I had a relative-in-law send me that crappy email of the 50 people the Clintons had 'killed'. I found five different links (including snopes) that debunked the email and I hit REPLY ALL which sent that reply to the boss, the co-workers and other family members.

The relative was pissed but I told her that I didn't not appreciate that garbage being sent to me. I also mentioned that if future emails were sent bcc: (blind carbon copy where you don't know who else got a copy) I would simply forward all debunks to the same addresses from the Clinton/50 people email.

That nipped the problem right there on the spot.

And seriously - send her back pictures of Lucianne Goldberg, Linda Tripp and Phylis Schafley to name a few. And Laura Bush is about as attractive as my feet after a 5 mile hike!

41. I'm not even sure what to say to that.
Her point is.....? Republicans think looks are the most important thing? Republicans are able to catch Democratic women in unflattering poses and therefore that makes them somehow superior? Republicans believe that what's on the outside is more important than what's on the inside?

That's what I'd ask her. I'd ask her what point she was trying to make.

52. How petty
The grandmother should be ashamed of herself for engaging anyone, much less a child, in such silly crap. Take a bunch of unflatterering, candid shots of one group and compare them with strip mall glamour shots of another group. This reminds me of the Aryan Nation "Black Beauty Queens". If you don't know what I'm talking about, you're not missing anything. And, if you do, you know how it applies here.

She and my sister in law already love to play this "oh look how evil and horrible and wicked she is" game but I don't give them any evidence, EVER, to support that position, so they just look silly.

56. It isn't nice to bash political women for their appearance anyway
Political women are doing an important job that has nothing do with their appearance. Some might say that looking good would help them get elected, but it still has nothing to do with how they do their job, how intelligent they are, or their character.
She was wrong to bash political women for their appearance, regardless of her politics, especially to a 10 year old girl who may be insecure about her appearance now or within the next few years.

that in ANY job where appearance isn't part of it (ie: modeling) appearance shouldn't matter. Which is why we are teaching her that.

Sending that to her was just vile.

And your MIL should not be interfering with the way that you are trying to raise your children –especially if she knows what your political beliefs are. Did she send this e-mail to your daughter as a one-on-one thing or did she do it as part of a general forward. Either way, I do wonder what she is trying to teach her granddaughter –to judge people on looks rather than anything else?

Well, hers was the only address we could see, anyway. Maybe she's finally figured out blind copy, LOL.

And yes, she most definitely knows what our beliefs are. But only because she started sending me the same nasty crap some time in 2002 and I kept telling her we don't agree with it and asking her to stop. I finally blocked her email address right after the election.

62. My first thought . . .
was that you should compare the two lists in terms of intelligence, sanity, etc. I mean Clinton, Reno, Albright are EACH brighter than their entire list combined. And also, half their list is either certifiably nuts, or just hugely racist. And finally, what's with that trollish Repuke in the lower right hand corner????

My second thought -- don't even dignify this crap with an answer. Which makes your response email PERFECT, and much more dignified than I would have sent -- and I'm a GUY!

A grandmother is a creature that lives and breathes for only ONE PURPOSE: to see her grandchildren.

I'd put it to her plain: Cut this shit out or you'll never see her or communicate with her again. This will strike at the very heart of even the sternest republican grandma.

71. My mom did that to my grandparents
and while, in that case, my mom was wrong and my grandparents were right, I always tend to think of such things as a last resort option. And they live 1000 miles away, so it's not like she's around them much, anyway. We're going to see if she does this again. I've told my daughter to show me any other political/nasty emails.

67. An interesting point...
Nearly every one of ours is a genuine political figures (Babs aside). Most of theirs are figures in the so-called "liberal media."

I'll take the intelligence from our side vs. the false beauty of their side. Any day.

And Madeline Albright is a hottie. She winked at me on a street in Georgetown back in '96.

Why in the world would she think this email is appropriate for a 10 year old??

My family gets on my nerves sometimes but I am very lucky that at least they are all Dems.

I do have an ex bro in law I am not sure about. He is rarely even pleasant to me so I don't care what his politics are. But I have always been sure he is a puke.

83. I don't care if they are ugly, that's not the point to me.
The point is no one should be sending this shit to a ten year old, the point is we teach her NOT to judge based on appearances and that's all that email is about.

Sure, I could send her back a huge email filled with tons of pictures of beautiful Democratic women. I could send horribly ugly pictures of repuke women.

But again, that's not the bigger point here.

86. I understand
but I also know that for some the shell is more important than the nut inside. What you need to do is something along the line of:

Hillary Clinton: Intelligent, warm, funny AND beautiful--INSIDE AND OUT.

Elizabeth Edwards: Beautiful, highly intelligent, compassionate AND passion.

Theresa Heinz-Kerry: Warm, beautiful, philanthropic, determined AND intelligent.

Stress that Democratic women have ALL the characteristics which make them far more than Repuke women could ever be.

Yes--the key is to show Grandma that sending out this kind of propaganda to your daughter is only alienating her from her granddaughter. Point out that this kind of sleaze is counterproductive, and that any more of it will precipitate in ruining all the good will you THOUGHT was between the two of them. Stress that political "games" for a child of that age is simply wrong--I know at 10 there were many things I cherished, but politics was NOT one of them.

Tell her you will censor her mail to your daughter until such time as grandma can actually talk about things which the daughter enjoys. I think she will get the picture.
