Contractor at SUNY Old Westbury campus discovers abandoned subterranean facility for growing marijuana

An underground marijuana farm, long abandoned by whoever put it there, was discovered by a curious contractor on the campus of State University of New York at Old Westbury, Nassau police said yesterday.

An electrical contractor working there Monday found some wires rigged to steal power from a building on campus, police said.

The contractor, whom police would not name, followed the wires to a trap door covered with twigs and dirt. Beyond the door, was the marijuana nursery - made up of three 10-feet-by-60-feet water tanks. Someone had also furnished the lair with lights.

One of the water tanks was used for seeds, another contained fledgling plants and a third housed mature plants, police said.

The crop, which had decayed, remained in the tanks unattended between three and 10 years, police said.
