In what ways are you still old fashioned?
Now why is it you don't get water anymore at a sit down restaurant?

1. Still like to pay cash, write checks and send snail mail.
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 06:24 PM by BlueIris
Of course, I'm also an e-mail junkie, but those are the top three.

Well, then there's that low number of sexual partners thing. And that "gosh, I like to be involved in the process of electing my representatives" thing. I'm actually pretty square.

3. I stay home with my kids.
That's downright quaint, isn't it?

I'd rather be addressed as Mrs. than Ms.

I enjoy cooking from scratch.

I prefer having the family all together for evening meals at the table with the television off.

15. Call me quaint too...
I'm a SAHM too. Actually, a WAHM.

I'd rather be addressed as Mrs. as well, though I'm not offended by Ms. It bugs me to be called MISS, though, now that I'm in my 30s.

I enjoy cooking from scratch and I make up a lot of my own recipes. 10 years ago I thought I hated cooking.

We are a "sit at the table" family as well.

I waited until I was married (first marriage, anyway) before I had sex.

27. I agree
There is that one perfect person out there for everyone. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to find that person. Love is natural. We get it from our parents when were are born. We feel it for our relatives. However, my experience has been that I thought I was in love with past relationships. Especially with my daughter's father. When actually it was being in love with the thought of "being in love." It wasn't until I had my daughter, that I actually knew what love was. It wasn't until then that I knew what my parents and relatives felt. I realized that I wasn't in love with her father after all, but was trapped into the relationship, with beatings, drugs, etc. It took my decision of my love for my daughter to get out of it when she was 4 months old, at the price of my father getting arrested and charged with 2 felony counts against my daughter's father. I waited 6 long years to get into a serious relationship with a wonderful man that I married last July. I knew what love was and that is what we have. He had just gotten out of a bad marriage and we found each other on a on-line dating site that we both posted on, just by chance.
So yes, I do believe that the right "one" is out there for everyone. It just takes a few tries to find them.

I chew with my mouth closed, I don't talk with food in my mouth, I don't chew gum when human beings are present, I send handwritten thank you notes, I don't play my music loud enough for other people to hear, I wear only black suits to funerals and wear somber and appropriate suits to weddings unless they're casual weddings, I don't wear short-sleeve "dress" shirts since no such thing exists, I wear only long-sleeve dress shirts and only with french cuffs because I respect other people and feel they shouldn't be forced to look at shitty stuff like buttons on a sleeve cuff; I hold doors open for ladies; I say "sir" and "ma'am", even to waitstaff and my inferiors; I am offended when sales people call me by my first name, I prefer to be addressed by my title, or at least Mr. (lastname); I don't vote for politicians whose sole purpose is to wreck the lives of the majority of people; I believe, as a gentleman, that my duty in life is make other people be at ease and comfortable and NOT focus on my needs.

18. Lots of ways....
My language is almost Victorian (the cussing on DU doesn't count). I think politeness is the glue that holds society together. I believe in holding doors open for women. I think Satan invented pantyhose, nothing is sexier than real stockings and a garter.

I believe men should wear ties. I believe in parenthood and all it entails.

I believe in treating your elders with respect. And there is nothing wrong (and a lot right) with saying "sir" and "ma'am".

I could go on....

Khash.

25. I prefer that people be married when they become parents
though I have absolutely nothing against a gay person adopting a child, nor do I make judgements about people who do have children and aren't married. (This belief is mainly because I have a daughter, and while we love her boyfriend and would really like to become grandparents, I want them to get married first.)

I say please and thank you, and like hearing it said to me. After 11 years of marriage, my husband and I have never missed a night of thanking the other one for cooking or fetching dinner.

I believe in being respectful to others, especially my elders.

If you cuss like a truck driver (like I can), zip it in public. Makes my skin crawl to hear someone throwing the f-bomb around in public, especially when there are children around.

I don't sleep around. Have no desire to.

I write real letters.

I listen to records. On vinyl. You know, the big, black, discy things...? Oh, nevermind...

I don't have or want an i-pod. I hate cell phones.

I don't buy things on credit. I save. I mend. I re-use.

I eat home-made meals, sitting at a table, with real, cloth napkins, with no TV on.

I walk places.

I think children need more discipline and less scheduling. Mine will watch no TV and have no junk food or sodas, etc.

I order small portions in restaurants.

I value time with family and close friends.

I introduce myself to my neighbors.

I don't view shopping as a hobby.

But, then I think most women 'don't get it' - they can try, a la SATC, but it doesn't really work most of the time, IMHO. However, if you WANT to do that, and have a willing, consensual partner, go for it! haha

But I do believe in respecting people until they give me reason not to. Being kind to anyone who is doing a service for me, whether they are a waitperson, a clerk, a nurse, a coworker, whoever.

I don't swear around other people's children unless I know they do, and even then, almost never.

I believe in raising a child who knows how and when to say please and thank you.

Another thing, I never address someone of my parents' generation by their first name until they tell me they prefer to be addressed by their first name. Until then it's Mr. or Ms. or Mrs. (My parents were really strict about this rule and now I'm stuck with it.)

45. Oh, I've long since embraced my inner old fogey.
Where do we start?

I believe in writing thank-you notes, though I must confess I sometimes put it off too much.

The right response to "Thank you" is "You're welcome," NOT "No problem." :grr:

I don't believe in automatically addressing people by their first names, particularly clients, and got two of my co-workers (and at least one client) laughing when I used the honorific "Mr." on a regular client.

The teacher is in charge in the classroom.

Children deserve kindness, protection, and guidance, NOT "respect."

I despise cell phones more than I can say.

I do not own an ipod.

There's a rich variety of films with subtitles, and/or in black and white, that are very much worth your time. Ditto for things made during the Production Code.

When I see a character humiliated in a movie, my reaction is to cringe and/or feel empathy, not to laugh at him/her.

Flip flops don't belong at the office unless you have injured your foot and can wear no other sort of shoe.

I don't care to see yards of naked flesh, plentiful exposed tattoos, and underwear on display at work (I'll bet you want directions to my office).

It takes so much more energy to be rude than to be polite. Why is being rude so common?

No credit cards.

I listen to music on my stereo, not my computer (and my stereo receiver used to be my dad's; it's from the 60s; it sounds great!)

I like to walk around the city. I like small shops. I like vintage clothes.

I've never been on a fad diet.

I'd rather read a book than watch something on a screen most of the time. I like thick books with long sentences and lush descriptions.

I like little unpretentious old-man bars with history where you can have a conversation WAY more than trendy dance clubs.

My sexual mores...well, they're old-fashioned too. Late-60s/70s-vintage, specifically.

78. +1 on the vintage stereo!
Can't beat the older machines, great sound and solid build. Lots more character too, and fairly easy to service to boot. I'd rather refurbish a thrift-shop/garage sale/curb-found vintage piece than buy one of the new disposable computerized surround receivers they sell nowadays...flimsy build, and too many damned buttons. Gimme a nice big analog tuning dial, real knobs, and a steel chassis. Toss in a good CD player and a beefy turntable and a nice pile of CD's and records, and I'm a happy puppy. The newest stereo amplification gear I own is the Luxman preamp and power amp (1985 vintage) in my main hi-fi, rest of my systems run old Pioneer and Sansui receivers. I've a 1976 Sansui 6060, bought at a thrift for $4. Just needed a fuse and a cleaning, and it sounds fabulous.

68. Having Good Manners
which essentially means being considerate of other people

Being responsible and accountable for your actions including cleaning up the messes you make

Being responsible for your own growth and moral development

Being responsible for your sex life by not over populating the world with kids you have no business having

All this makes me an old fogey I guess. :-(

75. You know, it's kind of weird...
I'm extremely liberal when it comes to social issues... and yet, for myself and my own personal habits, I consider myself fairly conservative.

The difference between us and them, Shell, is that we understand that not everyone is like us.

and make my living as a privateer. On occasion, I will allow women to speak in my presence, on high holidays and the like. Children should be seen and not heard, until the age of 8, then it's off to boarding school.

none of you people are old fashioned. that's old fashioned.

85. In every which way.
Dress - believe it or not, I'm pretty much never seen without tie (or bow-tie, or cravate) and jacket in public (the jacket is more for convenience - I can easily carry my wallet, mobile, keys, diary, pen &c.&.c that way.

I was raised to be extra polite to women; so I will give up my seat, walk closer to the road, pay for drinks &c. (as long as this does not offend - etiquette is all about making people feel good not bad).

What used to be called common courtesy - it doesn't seem to be a very common reality these days.

I say 'good morning' &c. to people I pass in the village, whether I know them or not - I would do so elsewhere, but one just gets odd looks.

And a couple of million other things....
