Do you ever listen to the commentary on DVDs?
I love them...ever since I heard the commentary on the Ocean's 11 with Matt Damon, Andy Garcia and Brad Pitt. LAst night I was listening to the one on Love Actually and heard something that made me bawl my eyes out. Remember the part towards the first with the wedding? Where at the end of it, music starts and people with instruments stand up and play and this guy starts singing "All you need is love?"
Well, that part was based on something that happened at Jim Henson's funeral. I guess Frank Oz was giving the eulogy, and all of a sudden he brings Kermit up and has him start singing "One Voice." Then from all over the funeral, people stand up with their respective muppets singing along. Then, Big Bird comes singing up the aisle. It was the most beautiful story and the imagery that was brought to my mind was just extraordinary. You can learn some awesome stuff from the commentary, as long as it includes actors. The ones with the director and tech people are kinda boring unless you're into filmmaking.

1. Quite a few of them
My favorites are from the John Boorman movies Excalibur and Zardoz.

He takes such pride in having shot in camera effects. Plus two of my favorite movies.

7. The Godfather commentary and director's cut footage
is what made me want a dvd player years ago! I couldn't wait...

I spent years reading any and everything I could get my hands on regarding director's cuts and their commentaries. I knew that the Godfather would be the ultimate dvd experience--I wasn't wrong. It's been one of the best I've seen and heard so far!

3. I love commentary tracks...they give a lot of great insight into the film
And the filmmaking process.

Fight Club's is great, with Brad, Edward and David.

And the commentary for "Dude, Where's My Car?" (my officiall gui;ty pleasure) is absolutely hilarious.

6. YES! That's the biggest reason to switch over to DVD!
I only buy the versions of movies that have the commentary.

They are ESSENTIAL!

10. Basic Instinct, Boogie Nights, Purple Rain, South Park episodes
are just a few of the dvd's I've listened to the commentary of.

The special edition of Pulp Fiction was very fun! You can watch it with subtitles that tell you interesting trivia about the making of the film, interesting film tidbits and Tarantino's influences. I learned a great deal about the film just by watching it like that.

While we are on the subject of director's cuts and commentary, the guy that directed Dodgeball is a total wanker! He wanted an artsy fartsy, independent film ending for Dodgeball that didn't fit with the movie he was making at all. Apparently he got all pissy about the studio not allowing his shitty ending and briefly walked away from the movie. I really hate pretentious directors that have bigger ideals for their movies than they need.

Other interesting commentaries:

All three Godfathers
Pirates of the Carribean
Practical Magic

12. That's the only reason I buy DVDs
Not only do the commentaries give you fascinating insights into the troubles and tribulations of making those movies we love, but they often are as entertaining as the movies themselves.

I LOVE DVD commentaries. I can't get enough of them.
