Anyone want to give me $300? - Sad puppy story
19 Rescued Shih Tzu Dogs Put Up For Adoption

"Nineteen purebred Shih Tzu dogs and puppies rescued from a Pepper Pike home last month are being offered for adoption.

The Cleveland Animal Protective League initially confiscated 36 dogs Sept. 8, but many died or had to be euthanized because they had the parvo virus.

"The dogs were being bred for profit and becoming ill due to a lack of medical care and an unclean environment," said Dori Villalon, executive director of the Cleveland APL."

The APL spent over $10,000 to care for the animals, Villalon said.

Adoption fees start at $300. The Shih Tzus will be available on a first-come first-served basis."

3. I dislike people that "need" purebreed dogs.
They provide the profit motive for these puppy mills. A lot of people are just in it for the money. Why is it that a mutt isn't as good as an inbred dog?

Moe isn't a purebreed but he is healthier, happier and was free. He does nothing for my ego. It isn't about me, its about us.......

4. Oh, I don't mind mutts
I just felt bad for these pups. I like the breed too though.

8. Your intentions are clear johnnie.
You want to give a dog that has had a rough start the loving home that it deserves.

5. Pretty shameful, if you ask me.
Unless the "usual" adoption fee is $300, asking more for either a purebreed or "famous case" dog is reprehensible. As a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charity, they could milk their fine work (which I certainly won't dispute) for future donations. Regardless of what is spent on a dog/cat upon and after rescue is all part of the game. Supply and demand has no place in a charity.

We've dumped a couple grand into a dog, and never upped our adoption fee. I know other rescues that have dumped $5k into a dog and didn't ask for an extra dime.

6. First thing that went through my mind also.
Reprehensible. Just find the dogs good homes and consider the shelter's money and time well spent.

7. For shelter to spend money they need to get money from
somewhere, no? How generous of you to decide how someone else should deal with their money.

11. You think it comes from adoption fees?
Spoken like a person that's NEVER been there. Big f'ing shock.

9. $300 won't even begin to cover the medical costs.
I assure you that non-profits have very little opportunity to profit like you're suggesting. Those dogs need a lot of care and asking adoptive parents to contribute is very reasonable.

10. Excuse me...
I RUN a non-profit animal rescue. I've served on the Board of another (very large budgeted) one. They can ask, but in this case they are insisting. Events such as this are the very reason that places like this hold fundraisers and employ or vote-in people that can draw donations. Also, as I stated, they should be milking the media for attention for their good work. People take notice and write checks to support good work. Part of being tax-exempt...you gotta earn it.

Do you know what the "cost" is to take in an animal, vet check, spay/neuter, give shots and microchip him/her? There's no profit, ever, in adoptions. That's why, normally, it's a set "fee" or donation.

I appreciate the rescue work that they've done, but demanding more moolah to adopt one of these specific dogs is wrong.
