I can't believe my daughter in law did this (long)
Behind my son's back, even. She knows what I feel about this admin, that I'm not religious...AND that I don't interfere or do or say anything about theirs. But I got a rotten email from her her and sent the following reply; (now I have to decide whether to tell my son about it...she sent it from work, not home. I know he'd never have let her do it. (The bold italic is from the original email, the normal type is my response)

Missy, how can you fall for this shit? Don't EVER send me anything like this again.

Will we still be the Land of the Free and still be United States of America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in United States of America because it is the Land of the Free??????

You mean like we did to the native populations of this county? We took away their land, forced them into reservations, took away their children, their language, their gods and their customs.

Think about it!
All we have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS?

My rights depend on the rights of others. If you can take them away from one, you can take them away from me.

I celebrate Christmas...........but because it isn't celebrated by everyone..............we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings.

I don't celebrate christmas. But you are free to. You can say merry christmas as much as you want to. But don't, then, get upset when those who don't follow your religion tell you 'happy hannuka' or 'happy yule'. Or say nothing to you. It is simply a matter of respect and if you do not know that that a person celebrates christmas, it is more respectful to say season's greetings...it is more inclusive, it is warmer, it is more friendly. It is more loving to your neighbor, your co-worker, your friend.

It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?

Well, duh! Move christmas away from winter and it won't happen. Seriously, since the dawn of time, there has always been a winter solstice holiday. The christians only co-opted it in order to bring more people into their fold.

We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.

No, we don't. Because what you want is nothing less than everything and then some. You have your right to yours, you want MY right to mine and to never have to face anything different from yourself. Get over it, you are not the only one or group in the universe.

This is an editorial written by an Toronto newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please! IMMIGRANTS, NOT Americans

So if you are not native American, you ARE an immigrant or the child of immigrants and the ONLY ones who have a right to say are those who were here when the first Europeans arrived.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.

And ENGLISH is a combination of all those languages and more...as spoken in this country. None of us speak it very well, either.

"One Nation Under God" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan… We adopted this motto because Christian men and women...founded this nation on Christian principles...and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home.........because

God is part of our culture.

Our country was founded on SECULAR principles. The majority of our forefathers were Deists at the most and none wanted religion to rule government, nor government to rule religion. Despite the motto (chosen in 1954, by the way, NOT 1776), you will find absolutely NO mention of any god in our constitution and NO, the declaration of independence doesn't count for mentioning a creator (which could just as easily be the flying spaghetti monster) because that ISN'T part of the constitution. Now, don't you think that if this country was really founded on 'christian principles' that that would have been written very plainly and clearly into the instruction manual for the country?

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. But once you are done complaining...whining...and griping...about our flag...our pledge...our national motto...or our way of life...I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other Great American freedom...
THE RIGHT TO LEAVE

Oh yes, we've heard this before...America, love it or leave it. I've got a better one for you; AMERICA, CHANGE IT OR LOSE IT.

1. I think it's good that she sent it to you.
It gave you the opportunity to respond with some very good answers. Maybe that's what she needed. It's sure better than having her send it to all the people who already agree with her. I have an ex-friend who will only talk to people who think exactly like she thinks ... so she's in no danger of learning anything.

I liked what you said, except for the "Missy" part ... unless her name is Missy. I'd be interested to hear how she received your response. It's too bad you shut off any further dialog with, "Don't EVER send me anything like this again." She is your daughter-in-law, after all. It's possible that your son respects her right to express herself to you. Mentioning it to him would be meddling.

That's my .02 worth. :hi:

2. Her name is Missy
and she emailed me back to say that I can stay out of hers and my son's life from now on for objecting to that crap.

My son would NEVER encourage her to send me anything like that...not even by just staying out of it. He knows my stands on things like that and would tell her, very firmly, to either not send it to me or be prepared to wear asbestos underwear.

However, since my son has MS and cannot work, she has control of the money and can shut off his internet access. Which she did last year at the WINTER HOLIDAY when I objected to getting a card that didn't even have a signature on it. (Actually what I said was that it was tacky) My son was upset about that one because my husband had just lost his mother and he had wanted to write a condolence note in the card and she sent it off without allowing him to.

She's a nutjob. And he's pretty much stuck right now.

3. OK -- sometimes people use "Missy" like "Young Lady".
So it appears that she didn't accept your pearls of wisdom after all. I was wrong to assume she wanted to learn something. Sorry it's bad for you and your son.

My MIL hates me, but my husband gives me free reign as to what I can or can't say to her. That's what made me think your son might do the same ... although my mail would probably look more like yours, and my MIL's would look like your DIL's. (I'm a Christian, but not like those pushy phonies. Jesus was a gentleman, after all.)

I hope the situation improves for all of you.

4. I won't let it be bad for my son
I simply won't let it. If it means cutting off communication, so be it. He'd be welcome to live here again if he needed to but I can't afford his medical, he's on her insurance and I'm not going to jeopardize that. MS is bad enough when you're getting treatment, going without it could be a death sentence.

6. My son has 4 by his first wife
who is an order of magnitude worse, if you can believe it. He's got custody of 2 now and working on a third. Will probably never get the youngest for the simple reason that he was too young to ever know my son as his father and the child will have enough damage to deal with later having the first wife for a mother.

7. Your remarks are very good and make perfect sense
However, we all know that the chances of changing the way these people think is close to impossible. Although I know how irritating it is to get these bullship emails, it might have been the better part of valor to simply reply by saying, "please don't send me any more of these."

The thing of it is, she's your son's wife. He's ill and she's in control and though that doesn't mean you have to agree with her, it might have been better to simply ignore it if only for his sake.

Just my 2 cents. But I'm very sorry - that's a rough situation.

9. If it was the first one, I'd probably agree with you
but it's not. It's not the first time I've asked her not to send me these things...usually citing lack of time to even read them. It's not the first time that even my son has tried to tell her that it's just better to stick to more neutral topics.

It was one too many.

11. Excellent answers. Clear, measured, factual. You took the high road.
Brava!
I'm considering this a "keeper," since I have a sister and a brother (well, 2 of 6 isn't so bad) who believe this crap.

I like having an answer where I don't lose my cool trying to explain it.

Thanks!
