Gang of Four "What We All Want" Dandy Warhols Remix (free DL)
Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 11:39 AM by swag
"What We All Want (Exclusive Dandy Warhols Monster Mix)"

Not as good as the original or the live version, but what the fuck - it's free.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000BG1PRU/ref=j_disp_dwnld_1/102-3151112-9307321?v=glance&s=music&st=digital-music

By the way, I've heard some of the tracks off this, and I'm buying it today, if not sooner (they returned to the studio recently and re-recorded all of these with the reuinted original four):

1. To Hell With Poverty
2. Damaged Goods
3. Natural's Not In It
4. Not Great Men
5. Why Theory?
6. Anthrax
7. Paralysed
8. What We All Want
9. Ether
10. He'd Send The Army
11. Capital
12. I Love A Man In Uniform
13. At Home He's A Tourist
14. We Live As We Dream, Alone

1. I almost bought that last weekend
I didn't know it was new recordings, so I didn't bother, since I have all their stuff on CD anyway (yes, even "Mall").

Damn, I'll have to check it out!

2. What I heard sounded pretty hard-assed.
Some of the tracks I'd rate as superior to the originals (though obviously not as surprising as when they first showed up, given the decades and progeny - some more worthy than others - that have passed through).

Their show was easily the best thing I've seen in the 21st Century. But I'm sure you saw them too.

By the way, in your 80s band pics, you had the best looking guitar.

3. Yeah, I missed them, unfortunately
I had tickets, but was busy having a nervous breakdown that night, unfortunately. I'm still kicking myself over missing that show. Hopefully they'll hold it together for another tour or two.

And thanks re: the guitar. It's a Washburn Falcon, the same model once played by Andy Summers. It's got massive sustain (neck-thru-body construction) and dual-coil pickups w/ coil taps so you can get some good Tele-type sounds as well as the typcial Les Paul-type crunch. It also has a brass nut, which was pretty unusual in such a cheap guitar ($399 retail in the early 80s).

I still have the guitar somewhere-- it's in dire need of a fret job, rewiring, bridge work, etc., but the body is still in good shape. I should spend a couple hundred and get it fixed up.

:hi:

6. I'd rate the show I saw in May .....Excellent.
Big fan. Have been for ages. I like the concept of rerecording songs with minimal overdubs too.

Guess I'll add this one to my collection.

19. You be the judge.
De gustibus non disputandum and all that shit.

Regardless, I don't think you'll be selling it used any time soon.

4. I've been meaning to get into these guys recently...
Any suggestion for a starting point? (Preferably an album, not just a single.)

8. "100 Flowers Bloom" 2-disc set is good
It's a career retrospective released in the late 80s, and is pretty good overall.

Otherwise, any of the first three albums (Entertainment, Solid Gold, Songs of the Free) are a good place to start.

15. That's very cool, Heidi.
I first heard of them when Entertainment came out and I read about them in the Village Voice. Since I worked at a record store that summer, I just ordered a copy from the distributor.

It took a long time for my ears and brain to come to terms with any of it (was extremely sheltered from everything but cold and plains brutality in north-central Montana). It was the US Release, so that must have been 1980, the summer after my first year of college. Finally I came to terms with what to me was an entirely new musical dialect, though, and I just became addicted after that.

If they make it over to your part of the world, you should definitely see the show.

12. Thanks for the link.
I'm gonna order it. I like the free download.
I saw them with REM in concert years ago. REM was the opening act.
Great show.

16. You're welcome
There are a couple more free remixes at the band's US site:

http://www.gangoffour.us/

Click the "music" link.

Apparently some remix CD is still in the works with stuff by the likes of Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) doing "I Love a Man in Uniform."

But I'm glad they issued this thing first.

17. Dave Allen is a really nice guy
I met him at a Low Pop Suicide show. He had an old, faded, 1000 Homo DJs T-shirt on.

18. When you get the cd
it will have a password to more free downloads including a couple videos. Saw them back in May too and it was the best show I've seen in ages.

On edit: your standard suckass radio studio mix, but still interesting.
