Vegetarians what is your main course today?
Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 09:44 AM by Ekirh
Just curious actually. I know there is the Tofurkey . . . but I know a few of my vegetarian friends can't stand it and won't be having it today. So I'm just curious what the "alternative" main courses will be. . or is there no main course and just a bunch of food sources all together.

Hope you don't mind my obnoxious curiousity. Happy Thanksgiving and all and hope you have a good one :).

1. While I'm no veggie, my family is and they're coming here today
so I'm roasting(?) a "Worthington meatless smoked turkey roll", from the seventh day adventist store. It is 1000% better than Tofurkey, yummy flavor and about 1/10th the salt.
In addition, we're having secret recipe stuffing and smashed potatoes and cashew mushroom gravy and holiday salad and candied yams and hot spiced cider and lots of red wines and hard cider and hot buttered rum and pumpkin roll for dessert.

8. Where can I find a Seventh Day Adventist store in Atlanta?
That turkey roll sounds delicious. I hate ToFu turkey.

14. Unlike most of the Xtians they don't seem to anxious to be known
I had to find it here in the white pages. The bookstore is attached to the church.

2. I had a good, long laugh with a friend yesterday, about the tofurkeys
It was about how you could simply end any sort of family fighting about who gets what by simply cutting the tofurkey into even quadrants, giving the platter a spin, and dishing it out that way, because it just doesn't matter who gets what part.

Oh, and the signed Hammacher Schlemmer models that came with hand-crafted faces and personalities

4. We don't always do a "main" course.
Yeah, we've had Tofurky and UnTurkey (which is better, I think) some years. We've also featured a cashew & vegetable loaf, stuffed delicatas, and once a vegan version of smoked white bean & garlic cassoulet.

But sometimes we just feast on "the trimmings."

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

12. It's not really soy-heavy.
It's mostly wheat gluten. Here:

The name makes me giggle a little.

5. I am going to my son's house.
He and his wife and kids are all meat eaters. I will just eat the side dishes and of course, stuff myself on the pumpkin pie and KoolWhip. That's the best part of Thanksgiving anyway.

16. I meant to
comment on this much earlier . . . . but that lasagna dish sounds absolutely delicious. . . I hope you enjoyed it.

As for myself. . . I think I over did it on the stuffing . . . I have no regrets.

9. Stuffed Acorn Squash for the main course
and all the trimmings - candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and almonds, corn, a salad with radicchio, butter lettuce, tangerines and dried cranberries (chile-lime dressing), celery sticks and three kinds of olives, rolls, a corn bread dressing my neighbor is bringing over, and another friend has baked the pies.

:Hi: Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

11. Doing both--best thing is sweet potato souffle--yum and two pies
with real whipped cream, plus cornbread dressing, cranberries (homemade), a Tofurky because my veggy kids think it is hilarious, and turkey parts for the wonderful, nonveggy husband. Oh, it is fun to have a "blended" family!!;)

18. Unturkey feast
Which included an Unturkey with soy "skin", stuffing and gravy. I'd been told that it tasted eerily like real turkey, but I was still surprised at how realistic it was*. The skin and stuffing would have fooled the most ardent omnivore. As for the Unturkey itself, the texture wasn't exactly like a real turkey (although it was nice and firm), but the taste was extremely close.

*I've only been a vegetarian for 8 months, so this is my first Thanksgiving without a regular turkey.

20. I've only recently switched to a veggie lifestyle
For my main course I had a grilled portabello mushroom topped with pesto sauce. Then all the sides as usual, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, mashed potatos and gravy. I made 2 pumpkin pies and my husband made a to die for coconut cream pie.

We were pretty well stuffed. :D

22. Our main dish was winter vegetable cobbler
It has lentils or beans for protein, and also cauliflower, carrots, celery, mushrooms, onion, garlic and rutabaga (we substituted broccoli, another source of protein) in a tomato-based broth. Topped with cheese and herb bisquits. It was really yummy!

We also had broccoli and cauliflower on the side for the kids (who actually like the stuff), sweet potatoes, a salad with mandarin oranges, almonds, cranberries, red onions and romaine lettuce.

We did make a turkey breast and gravy for the meat eaters of the family.

For desserts, we had pumpkin pie (made with fat-free evap milk), and low-fat lemon bars and low-fat chocolate-cheesecake bars that were extremely rich and decadent!

I'm looking forward to the leftovers today!

23. Left overs are a beautiful thing
In fact I've been having my eye on the left over stuffing (that my Grandma hid from the rest of the family to keep to ourselves hmmmm) for sometime in the near immediate future.
