Need an opinion (work-related)
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 08:56 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB
I got a lead on a job (I'm currently employed, so there's no big rush for me to jump ship; I've been at my job for about 6 1/2 years, but I'm basically doing the same thing now as I've been doing since I got there. So, if I were to leave it would be for more responsibility, the chance to move up and, of course, more $$).

She said I could either call during my lunch hour, or she could call me at home in the evening. I wasn't able to get away from my office (didn't have my car today), and there's no place to really "walk to" where there's any privacy in my office building (work for a small firm). She said I could call her back last night to let her know which I preferred. I called her back and asked if she wouldn't mind calling me around 8 pm tonight. She emailed me and confirmed she would, but it might be "a little after 8:00."

Right now, it's 8:53 pm, and no phone call.

I'm like, WTF.

I don't know if something happened to her or what. It's a long-distance call (she's calling from the company's HQ out-of-town, though the job is local). Would you call her tomorrow to find out what happened or think of this as a blow off?

2. I'm thinking "is this how you treat potential employees or what?"

I was sort of luke warm on the job to begin with, but wanted to find out more.

5. I wouldn't say that.
I would just state that you're following up when you hadn't gotten a phone call.

8. Oh, I wouldn't be rude, of course. Just wondering to myself
what's up. Maybe she forgot? Left my number at work? Hasn't happened to me before in a job search; usually I get blown off AFTER the interview?!

3. If she doesn't call you tonight . . .
. . . give her a call tomorrow, about mid-morning.

6. RELAX, Call tomorrow but make this one point
State you won't call from work, she as an employer would not want you doing that to her. It shows "loyalty", which we know does not exist, but is still great for kissing ass.

Leave the building.

11. I stated in my voice mail I don't feel comfortable calling from work
as I want to protect my privacy and I'm sure she understands that.

15. Since she offered to call me at home, I took her up on it. That way,
I can talk freely w/out having anyone hear me (small office; walls have ears). Changed my plans tonight to be home.

16. Well, then you may be getting a call any second!
Or maybe you're on the phone right now!

BTW, if she turns out to be flaky, don't read too much into it. Wait until you get into the interview process to make any important decisions.

14. You need more data before you are rude to her, that's for sure
Give her a call in the morning, and see if a reschedule will work.

She might have had a sick kid, got stuck with a shitload of work, or their phone system might even have gone out, or any of a hundred possible things.

If this happens two or three times, then it's worth worrying about and wondering if that's a place you'd even want to work at.

But for the first time, give her some slack.

That's career suicide! I'm just frustrated, so venting here.

24. Dogs ONLY relieve stress at night when you're petting them
while they lay in your lap and you realize how much you totally love them. Then you realize that you don't know how you lived so long without, even when you're cleaning up the puke, pee, poop, ripped up garbage, vet bills, food, vitamins, toys, hair (always the hair).

My Buddha. 11.5 years of joy.

Would sleep there till I woke up, wouldn't move a muscle. One of my great dogs. Loved everyone, loved children, loved her cats. Would clean them till they were soaked.

When you looked up companion in the dictionary, her picture was there.:toast:

22. Of course you should call
What's the worse that can happen? She blows you off then? So what have you lost? And, if you don't call, she'll think you blew her off.

Just say that you are sorry you missed her and you wanted to make sure that she had your number. You're looking forward to talking with her.

If it turns out that she was blowing you off or she's just a jerk or whatever, you don't have to take the job even if it is offered.

Sounds like the job wouldn't offer me a lot of creativity, which I need, and I would be busier than hell ("no downtime" and "no official comp. time policy."). Would pay more (didn't give me a range, but apparently what I'm earning is "considered low" for them), but I guess they don't pay more for nothing.
