North Texas is shutting down.
First storm of the year and a little bit of sleet and the place just closes.

I feel sorry for all of those poor folks out there on the roads. Nobody here can drive on the ice. Of course, having an overpass 12 stories high in the air doesn't help either. Hasn't frozen yet but you know it's gonna freeze tonight.

Anyone living here from the northern states would be totally laughing their ass off. A bazillion accidents everywhere. Or would that be a brazillion?

1. Yep, and my husband is on his way home.
The highways are a parking lot, so I gave him directions on the "back way" home. He's almost here!

3. I am in bed
With cats. And a hat on. And the electric blanket on. Watching the local news covering the parking lot. :D

2. I live in Ohio and used to live in Denver
People do not drive well in snow or ice in either location. Rain causes people here to go into *scary" mode. Ice will close down most of the city. We are expecting 3-6 inches of snow tomorrow afternoon. The weather advisories have been out since last (Tuesday) night. Weird.

5. 210 flights cancelled out in DFW airport.
Whoa!

So nobody can drive on this eh? Well, I guess that's a comfort that we're not all total nimrods down here. :D

6. The ONLY people who know how to drive in "weather" are those...
...on the eastern seaboard and upstate New York. And even then, just barely. One of the best things I learned while living there was how to drive in snow and/or ice.

I grew up in Dallas--the freakout factor in ice storms never ceases to amaze me.

I lived in Southern California for many years--their response to rain is an initial "What is this wet stuff falling from the sky? The sky god must be ANGRY! AAAAAAHHHHH!" And then they deal with it by driving either SO FUCKING SLOWLY or about 100 miles per hour. Maybe they think they can outrun it.

Now I live in Northern California, and I think, of ALL the places I've lived (and I didn't even list them all), these folks are by far the dumbest. I'm sure my fellow DUers in the north bay are exceptions to that, but everybody else--jesus christ. I'd love to drop some of these folks on the beltway at 5:30 and see if they survive. It'd be so fun to watch.

8. the sky god -- LOL.
Yes, the local news here is just trippin' over about half an inch of ice/snow. But if it means the entire populace gets to stay inside where it's warm, I'm all for it. :P

7. Someone from my company was in Corpus Christi overnight last night..
And was scheduled to fly out via Dallas back to Chicago this morning. She frantically called her assistant (who sits out in front of my office) asking that she DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! (The woman is high maintenance). It was after 9 and she wanted to switch flights to return via Houston and be back by 3 p.m. at the latest.

Well, she is getting back but not at the hour she wanted. Sounds like it was a mess with DFW shutting down.

... I head for home when the ice hits here, people think that if they are driving a 4X4 they are invincible, failing to note that every car has 4 wheel brakes :)

Since so many there knows how to drive in that mess it looks like utter chaos. Inch of snow here? That's just a dusting.

17. Oh no! Quick! To the Piggly Wiggly for bread and batteries!
But be careful of the stampeding masses. I know what it is like when we get a little ice or snow here in Alabama. People go nuts. The schools close for two or three days even if there is no accumulation. No one goes to work. And the grocery stores the day before? Holy crap! The lines are all the way back to the meat department!

I lived in Missouri for a while, and people thought I was crazy when I just assumed there would be no work or school the first big snow that fell in November. Of course, things got worse when our neighbors caught sight of us trying to clear the snow off our driveway...with a garden rake.

:hide:

18. Nothing but sleet over here right now
I'm huddled under a blanket using my laptop for warmth. My poor wife is sacked out nearby.

Before we left work for the day, I heard reports of 15 wrecks within the last 20 minutes. The rest of the nation must think we're nuts.

We may get some here(ct) on Friday, but they aren't really sure how much. We already have a couple inches on the ground from last week, so we're into the swing of it already. Best of luck to you guys!

23. I went to a football game at UT in Austin...
...in mid-October several years ago with one of my college buddies, who was living in Dallas at the time. It was probably 55 degrees at game time. My buddy and I, being of sturdy Midwestern stock, were perfectly comfortable in sweatshirts and jeans. The natives, on the other hand were bundled up as if going to the arctic. Until that day, I had no idea they made snowmobile suits in Texas orange.

Yep.... it's coooooooooooooooold.

I grew up in Colorado, so I know what you mean, but I've been here long enough now that I too feel the compulsion to dress for an arctic expedition in the "cold." :D

31. I just spent four hours of my life
driving from Haltom City to Denton. Glaze ice, I35 pretty much shut down due to trucks unable to get up the hills on the interstate. I am crashing at my son's apartment tonight, and not really sure I can get home tomorrow. Denison is still eighty miles away. Most of the drivers were safe and courteous, but a few jerks on the road.

32. I was raised in northern Indiana. Ice doesn't scare me.
It's all those freaking morans on the road who think it's somehow FUN to find themselves going backward at full speed on the interstate after they get onto that overpass and discover it's covered with black ice. THEY scare me.
