How many of you own a gun?
Pistol or Rifol?

I was just curious since so many of you seem to live in cities. Crime is supposedly high there.

1. No, but I will in the future.

Probably once I graduate college and possibly grad school. Planning on purchasing a handgun and a shotgun.

There's not really a need at the moment as I'm living on-campus, and once I'm off-campus, having a firearm around people less mature than myself seems to be a bad idea.

Good guy, if a little bit much. We chat over the fence in the summer ... I have little doubt he'd annihilate anyone he saw on my porch looking suspicious.

A fact I enjoy relating to the 17 year-old's boyfriends.

Inherited the rifles and shotguns from my father when he passed. I don't hunt, but I can't part with them. The pistols are all mine because I enjoy shooting them.

40. No I'm not veggie or vegan
though I do eat vegetarian meals from time to time. Part-time veggie, maybe?

I just don't feel safe around them. So I don't have them. If there's a fight, most people are shot in their own homes with their own weapons. So the big reason "I'll defend myself" goes out the window.

39. Why are you against automatic weapons?
If the individual passes the extensive FBI background check required for class 3 weapons why shouldn't they be allowed to own one? There hasn't been one crime committed with a legally registered class3 weapon.
Considering also you can't purchase one for much under 15,000 it isn't likely to be used by a criminal to rob a liqueur store.
I would love to own one of those old "tommy guns" but the cheapest I have seen one is 25,000 (it did come in its original violin case though!)

28. Pistols, rifles and shotguns
We prefer a .410 "snakecharmer" for home defense. Plenty of stopping power, with a reduced likelihood of wall penetration.

My wife and I are each proficient in the use of both handguns and "long" guns.

All NRA bullshit aside, it's very interesting that our state, WV, has among the highest per capita gun ownership *and* the lowest crime. I don't think ownership alone explains the statistic. Part and parcel of the statistic is the intimate familiarity West Virginians have with firearms. It probably goes a long way toward explaining our willingness to join the military, as well. In almost every war, West Virginia has led the way in sending our sons (and now, daughters) to the fight.

Even now, when the military is struggling to meet recruiting goals, we're still above 100% for National Guard recruiting.

and given the muzzle velocity of a 9 mm or even a .45, the possibility for piercing walls, etc is too great.

That snakecharmer's a beauty at close range with some 4 or 6 shot. In like an apple out like a cantaloupe.

I tell my friends in "civilization" that we have to have guns here in WV b/c law enforcement response times mean all the cops will be able to do is string the yellow tape and draw the chalk outlines.

30. Not in this house, there's a reason, too...
when a relative was very young, he found a family member's gun and proceeded to play with it. The gun fired, and my relative hurt someone. They weren't hurt badly, but the point is they could have been. Sure, no one ever expects that stuff to happen, but there's always a chance, even if you don't have kids--

Heard another story (on a documentary on HBO) of a young boy getting into a neighbor's garage, and getting to their gun. Again, no one hurt, but they could have been...

So, nope. Not in this house.

32. .357 Magnum
I don't carry it with me. But I never go anywhere unarmed anymore - usually I carry an ivory handled straight-razor. Having been a victim of violence (several times), I decided it ain't gonna happen again.

That's sad, very sad. But it's also reality. I've only fired the gun in anger once. And I fired it into the air, not at anyone. But I had to stop what was happening and that was the quickest and surest method. I'm not proud of it. The cops weren't exactly pleased either.

Khash.

38. Two here
A .22 rifle and .22 pistol. Kind of need it out here in the country. Have the animals and such. I had to use the .22 pistol this summer when a Pitt Bull kept coming onto our property for over a month, and bugging my two dogs through the fence. Constant calls to Animal Control, they could never find him. He kept bum rushing me at the fence and got him in the chest with bird shot, he took off. However that did not stop him, he came back 30 minutes later. That was after I had called Animal Control, again, and they still could not find him. Later that evening, we went to dinner with my parents that were up for the weekend and he rushed us as we were getting out of the truck. My husband told me to load the rifle with the .22 loads and he shot him with that. Damn thing took one to the head and took off running!!! Strong dog! However, he hasn't been back, and we haven't had to use it again. However they are there if we need them.

I do not hunt (other than coyotes). The guns are for self protection only. I live in a rural area with very little police protection. If I am not willing to participate in my own self defense then I don't get any.
BTW-No children in the house, no children ever visit and there are no children living nearby. I only keep one shotgun out of the gun safe, the rest of the guns are locked up tighter than dicks hat band.

for hunting, along with a .22, a Colt 44 because it was my FIL'sI(and one I'd like to see gone, because it is the gun he killed himself with, an Enfield (WW/Lend lease), M1 Garand (WW rifle), and another WW II rifle that I cannot remember the name of. My husband is a WWII gun buff. There is no ammunition in the house, and while the kids are still children, they are disassembled and locked away.

Crime is high in Detroit, but we don't have a gun for protection. As a real estate appraiser, MrG wants me to get a small Remington, but I've been balking. He's worried about empty houses, foreclosures and that sort of thing. For now I carry Mace, but I wouldn't mind a taser.

49. No guns here.
Years ago I worked with a woman whose husband collected guns. Once they returned from vacation and discovered that their house had been burglarized in their absence...including the gun collection. That was about 100 guns that ended up on the streets in the hands of people who were not using them for protection, target shooting or hunting.

After that, the husband gave up collecting guns.

50. Currently, none...
I technically own an antique shotgun, but it's strictly a wallhanger, and my parents have it right now over in East Texas. My wife does not feel comfortable having a gun in the house, so I am unarmed.

I have owned a TEC-DC9 for a short period of time. That was eleven years ago. Never loaded it, let alone fired it. Made too many people nervous.

Recently, we travelled to a firing range to brush up on our skills. My wife tried out a .357 Ruger, and I tried an Arsenal MAK-90. If she gave her OK, I'd own some sort of semi-auto AK variant - I seem to be best with those rifles. I've also fired a 9mm Uzi, and my wife fired a .223 Bushmaster. She took out a very menacing piece of ceiling with it, too. (At the range, that is.)
