A.E. van Vogt wrote The book of Ptah, but google tells me Ptah is an Egyptian god, so it is hardly original to van Vogt, but I did get the author right (although my first thought was Poul Anderson).

It so happens that I have also spent most of my adult life without a car, although I rent one from time to time, and there is no mass transit where I live, never has been.
