I am an novice belly dancer so this is great information for one who is starting out. (I've been at this for about a year.)

3. You are very welcome
There are lots of people selling lots of stuff out there. I like ebay and the NY swap page is good sometimes for less expensive used stuff (since I don't see the need to spend brazillions on a costume). I've been doing this for 20+ yrs and have gotten stuff from most of these people. Look at used clothing stores also since there is often things you can buy cheaply and modify (like long slinky dresses). Have fun and post a picture of what you get.

4. any stile, as long as it is 3 yards long.
Thank you so much! I am just starting and some of the videos need a veil to work with. And if I am going to do this I am going to do it right! I got lucky a place here in town at lest sell the videos. My neighbors seem to think it is wrong to learn anything middle eastern if it is not to help with the war effort. With my luck lately, the little old lady down the hall will think I am a terrorist out to get her! She is like that.:eyes:
At lest my Man supports it.

9. Agreed. That and the quick hip thrust, of course!
;)

I've been belly-dancing for more than ten years, but I couldn't begin to tell anyone where to buy a costume. I learned while living in the Middle East and then took lessons for a while back here in the states. It is great fun, good exercise, and a nice way to, er, win friends and influence people...

Very cool that your chiropractor recommended it - I'm sure it did help work out any kinks or knots you might have had.

12. i used to go to Serena's studio in NYC....
it was very cute. often her husband and son would play live music for the class to dance to. i really like that part.
i have no idea if she is still at it though.
well the chiro said it was that or weights, so naturally i choose dancing.

19. Hey, woman, I'm going to take bellydancing, too!
The local dance studio finally found a bellydance instructor, so I'm going to start after the first of the year.

You'll have to talk to me about that "winning friends and influencing people" thing ;-). I'm a little weirded out about doing this in public .

11. I like it because it lets me feel more feminine
A day of trying to get people to do what they are suppose to can really make you fell un-human. I like being able to find that fun loving, naughty, playful girl again.

10. You can buy fabric too and then edge it with trim or beads.
You want to do something with the edge you hold onto (not the ends that flap free). Either roll the edge and whipstitch it, or sew (machine works) some sort of trim, bricbrac, etc, or whipstitch beads onto it. I did 1 veil with beads and it went really fast. Use seed beads, put about 8 beads on the thread, pass it through the edge, then another 8 beads, another pass through, etc. Tie off every few sets in case it breaks. It makes the edge easy to find and hold onto and it is fast to do. Or machine sew some sort of trim onto it, now is a good time to get gold trim cheap what with Z-mas and all.

14. If you mean those ones with fake coins and beads crotched on, nope
I cannot figure out how they get the beads onto the threads except 1 by 1 and that is just too much work. If you want one of those, go to eBay and be patient. I've picked up a couple for aroun $20-25 (including shipping). It is a great time of yr to get glittery, etc, cool fabric to make hipscarves out of. Buy a yard of something (or less), cut it and attach some sort of fringe along the bottom edge 9I found some 4 inch and 12 inch rayon chainette fringe which is good). Or buy pailettes and attach them losely enough so they will move when you do.

18. Too bad you weren't a little bit closer to me.
We have a Wiccan shop that has recently started selling veils and skirt sets. They have them on display in their front window.

24. I don't know...it' gives a book and music tapes and some symbols...
it doesn't give the costumes though. The beads and bra's and the rest that one needs. Maybe the booklet in the box gives some websites or places to contact for the costumes, though.

I'd check out their website for "Gifts under $20.00, though. And, if that doesn't work...just put in "Belly Dancing" and maybe it will come up on their web site.

They had boxes of this with other Under $20 gifts that were all kind of neat. "Tarot Cards for Beginners" (a beautiful boxed set with booklet of instructions" and "Origami for Beginners" with lots of very neat Origami papers to practice on...Domino's and other stuff on a big table in our Barnes & Noble here. It's a huge store...but I'll bet you'll find something on their web site for those of you who live away from the Mega Mall Stores.
