4. That is assuming you don't keep opening the door forcing
the refrigerator to start up and cool it down below 41 degrees all the time.

5. Throw it in a tub of lukewarm water.
Refresh the water once per hour. It will thaw in a few hours. Works every time to get it to thaw the rest of the way. If it is still frozen inside, run warm water in there to get the gizzards out (if there are any in there). That is how I do it. I hate trying to get those damn things thawed!!

....get some salt and sugar in that water - brined turkeys are wonderful, especially when smoked!

One thing I would do is to make sure you're using COLD water. Lukewarm water can be a haven for bacteria, and cold water will thaw it just as fast. You don't want to give the gift of salmonella this Christmas.

12. You're right. Cold water is recommended for the thawing bath.
The turkey should be completely submerged and the water changed every half hour.

9. But have you given much thought lately To the turkey holocaust?
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 03:35 PM by IanDB1
We gather together
For yams, beans, and cranberry sauce.
But have you given much thought lately
To the turkey holocaust?
200 million noble birds
Slaughtered every fall.
Ain't no difference between Hitler, Stalin,
And the folks at Butterball, Butterball.
So set your tables, America
From Birmingham to Branson.
But when you carve that turkey
You're a finger lickin' Charlie Manson.
Enjoy your pumpkin pie,
Your buttery Idaho spuds,
Grandma's chestnut stuffing,
And a turkey basted in blood.
Basted in blood
Basted in blood
Basted in blood
Enjoy your turkey, enjoy...
Basted in blood
Basted in blood
Basted in blood
Basted in blood
Basted in blood
Basted in blood.

15. I tried taking mine to the vet
alas, DOA.

We think it happened before the hypothermia set in.
The body was dismembered. The killer apparently kept certain body parts while leaving others behind stuffed inside the body cavities. Sick.

We suspect Hannibal Lector due to the surgical precision.

10. either way (warm or cold water) is not a good plan. but if you have to
Cold Water Thawing (Not Recommended)

Thawing a frozen turkey in cold water is another defrosting method that has been used for years, but with increased awareness of illness due to bacterial growth, it is generally not recommended. There is a good chance that bacteria may rapidly multiply in thawed areas near the surface of the bird while the interior may still be frozen.

If you absolutely must thaw the turkey with cold water, there are a few steps that can be taken to make it as safe as possible:

As with thawing in the refrigerator, the bird should be kept in its original wrapper.
If the original wrapper has any punctures or tears in it, the turkey should be placed in another plastic bag and sealed.
The turkey should be placed breast side down and it should be completely covered with water.
The water must be changed every 30 minutes.
Cold water thawing is much faster than thawing in the refrigerator (usually 8 to 10 times faster), but it can be annoying having to change the water every 30 minutes, especially when thawing a large turkey. At least 30 minutes defrosting time per pound should be allowed when using the cold water method.
Once the turkey is thawed, it should be cooked immediately

"Unlike my Butterball friend, I thawed in a 41 degree fridge in only 1 day!"
