5. Every day

my heart still breaks for those in need within our nation. Katrina was a clear message that there are citizens within the wealthiest nation on earth who are in dire need.

It is my hope that those who suffered great loss and pain due to Katrina will be given back in some measure a semblance of life.

It is my hope that those who have not reconnected with their children, will be with them again.

It is my hope that all the victims of Katrina will never be forgotten.

It is my hope that all American citizens who are in need of help, health, food and jobs will someday be recognized as citizens rather than as groups of people who are at the mercy of a government in clear need of the return of democracy.

Some may call me a bleeding heart liberal; I call myself human.

holiday season to you and to everyone else, scattered far and wide, who continues to live every day with the effects of the Gulf Coast disaster a constant presence. It's perhaps asking for too much of a miracle for the people heading the bureaucracies, or certainly the usurpers in charge of them, to suddenly care, but the rest of us do. I hope that the new year brings changes for the better, for all of you and -- for that matter -- for everyone else.
