Otis is pretty lazy; after all, he's a tomcat. But he has moods when he's even lazier than usual. He'll lie on the bed on a sunny afternoon, and he will get into a serious snooze. I can't begrudge him his rest; after all, he works hard.
However . . . I have a test for how lazy he is. While he's lying there I reach over and hold his back paw. I don't squeeze or move the back paw, I just hold it. If he's really lazy, he'll allow it. Otherwise he'll start to twitch his tail, and after that he'll say something. If, after a minute, I haven't let go by then, he'll make a more irritated-sounding protest, this time alleging "harassment." Note that this protocol applies only to the back paw. The front paw is always off-limits while he's napping.
This is payback for his nocturnal friskiness, for which I don't have a lot of sympathy, especially when he attacks my toes. He probably attributes my reluctance to laziness.
