1. The Address at Gettysburg is one of the rarest of all gems.
To think he was dejected over it because he felt he "let the people down." Someone give us a time machine and we will persuade Mr. Lincoln that his Address let no one down and has lifted millions since.

Out of pure mercy however, we will NOT introduce him to the current head of his party.

___

Rev, Mr. Lincoln is about the only Republican there is who can lift hearts. McCloskey and Weicker aren't at all bad, and I even like them, but Lincoln is the prize.

George Will, a colunnist I generally can't stand, in reference to the discernible absence of dignity and coherence of the first George Bush, cited the example of Lincoln as the party's first Republican and reminded viewers that despite its current state it was" a stream that nevertheless had snow at its source."

And all the rivers run to the sea and still the sea is not full, etc.

Thank you for another wonderful post on DU.

2. I heard a spot on NPR about Lincoln on Friday.
I never knew the full story of Gettysburg. Apparently, the first speaker bloviated for 2 full hours. (the horror!) After he finished speaking, Lincoln rose and spoke those simple lines, that IMO, shaped our nation's heart.

Happy Birthday, Abe. You were the greatest.

3. Really. Of course, I've respected others. John V. Lindsey was a
Republican, for a while, and he was a major influence on me.
