You're going with gravity, there's no extra effort, WALK down the goddam thing and get out of my way.
It's not a ride, there are no videos or animatronic dolls singing 'small world after all'. It's a moving staircase. That's all. Walk it.

:grr:

1. Endemic problem at IAH ("Bush Incontinent-al")
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 06:13 PM by Fenris
People standing on the moving sidewalks that connect terminal C to terminal E. Ordinarily this is fine, but not when you stand shoulder to shoulder, prohibiting people to pass you. C->E is a big trek, and usually has to be made in a short amount of time. In other words, read the sign that says standing people should stay on the RIGHT side.

4. That was going to be my corrollary rant...
...I hate the airport sidewalk-riders, too. Especially if they block the whole walkway.

2. Just 'cuz YOU don't see the animatronic dolls...
...doesn't mean I don't. They usually take the form of giant spiders singing in Hebrew. So stop rushing me and let me enjoy the show.

I wish I understood Hebrew.

8. I saw them as a ride as a kid
I wasn't very often taken to places with esclators. Anytime, I did get to ride an escalator, I thought that it was great fun. Even some adults from rural areas visitng the city still might find it fun. There should be one side for standing and one side for walking though.

12. Dude, you got it all wrong
The escalator (and moving sidewalk) are EXACTLY for people who don't want to walk, either up stairs, down stairs or laterally along a sidewalk!

And how much of a hurry do you have to be in where a MOVING staircase is TOO SLOW for you?

Hmmmmm? :-)

19. Maybe it balances the 'up' escalator
if you geared them together, you could use the potential energy of the people coming down to reduce the energy needed to power the up escalator.

I'm sure this isn't how it works but...it just came to me!

20. I'll bet you don't wear bifocals
If I tried to walk down the escalator, I'd have to look out the bottom of my glasses, which are meant for reading. Those lines in the steps and all the moving..can't do it. Gotta stand in one place. Escalators kind of freak me out anyway. Unnatural. Steps shouldn't move, you know?

29. I still have 20-20 on distance, and use readers now...
...but I'm always looking over the rim and I'm sure that makes me look even more geezerish than I am. So I'm opting for full-time glasses.

25. Semi-related topic - escalators in stairwells!
It must have been a '60s thing when they were installed, but a building in town has escalators in the stairwells. Since I always take the stairs, I opened the door to the stairwell and wondered, "What the hell is that racket?" Then I saw them. Stairwell escalators (with salmon-pink sidewalls).
