Do not kill spiders in the nude!
SYDNEY (Reuters) - A red-faced Australian nudist who tried to set fire to what he thought was a deadly funnel web spider's nest ended up with badly burned buttocks, emergency officials said Monday.

The 56-year-old man was at a nudist colony near Bowral, about 60 miles southwest of Sydney, Sunday when he spotted what he believed to be a funnel web spider hole.

Ambulance workers, including a helicopter crew, were called to the scene after the man poured petrol down the hole and then lit a match in an attempt to kill the offending arachnid.

"The exploding gasoline fumes left the man with burns to 18 percent of his body, on the upper leg and buttocks," the NRMA Careflight helicopter rescue service said in a statement.

It said the man's lack of clothing probably contributed to the extent of his burns.

1. I don't kill spiders, nude or not...
I squeal and scream like a little girl for the nearest available male. If that fails, I flail about and throw shoes at it. If Ginsberg, the mighty hunter cat is available, he is shown the spider. If he sees a bug, he will eat it. Actually, I guess he can also qualify as the nearest available male most of the time.

4. Yup. There are downsides like...
recieving headless animals as gifts or his love of rolling in dirt and mud, but I can deal with those.

As long as he kills all bugs in sight, I'll throw out his "gifts" and throw him in the shower repeatedly until he is no longer grey.

The bathing method is pretty humorous. He'll attack if you give him a "real" bath, but you can get away with simply throwing him into the shower under running water 5-10 times until he's clean. He makes no connection between me and the water, in fact, he'll jump out and hide behind me for protection. I feel kind of bad, but no muddy cats in my bed and it is hilarious to watch. Especially when he tries to hang onto the doorknob. You see, he completely knows that doorhandles open doors and that sliding doors get pushed and knobs get turned. He's just not strong enough to do it. One day he'll get the knob turned enough though. The sliding door would be a nice skill as long as he remembered to close it. Then, he could let himself in and out without crying at me every 10 seconds.

5. cat bathing
can get humorous - i mean, they are usually so dignified and then they totally lose it. ah well, sometimes they need a good dose of humility. i had a cat that had no idea what clean meant (no exaggeration) so it was a constant struggle. i'm afraid i had to hold him by the scruff of the neck with one hand and wash him with the other. i should have tried the shower scenerio.

6. The shower thing only works if they don't associate it with you.
I'd never attempt it with Midnight. She got a bath from my father when she was 7 weeks old (rescued from the alley next to our apt). She wouldn't let him touch her for two years after that. She's now 13 and has only recieved one bath in her life, but she doesn't roll in mud.

Meanwhile, the two ragdoll cats will jump in the shower with you and like going to the groomer's.

3. The man's right in trying to get the bastard, but wrong in method.
Anything less than C4 is a waste of time.

Australians LOVE LOVE LOVE their funnel-web spiders!

Spiders may differ from country to country. Most other countries have wussy spiders. When you have a hand sized leaping aggro sombitch, gimme a call!
After that, if said leaping bastard also happens to inject the world's most venom, give us another call! (Actually, is there a spider that injects more? I didn't think so, but I could be wrong)

8. a happy ending for the spider?
"The fate of the bunkered spider was unknown, although other guests at the resort thought it was probably a harmless trapdoor spider and not a deadly funnel web," the statement said.

NRMA Careflight said it was called to a property in the same area in January when another man kicked a spider that was crawling up the wall of a friend's cabin. The man broke his leg in two places, it said."
