Mainly The War in Iraq:

That includes the lead up to the war; the war itself and the initial aftermath ( I believe Bush declared Mission Accomplished before my term ended ). Oddly enough, for the most part, the conservative infiltrators were not the problem - they were usually like relief in fact; especially the idiots who thought they were the first to come up with idea of infiltrating a liberal message board. The professional operatives were a different matter: especially the chap who obliquely introduced himself to me in a London pub. However, for the most part they only came onto the board to disparage the credibility of news sources that they, or their sponsors, felt threatened by - al-jazeera and a russian military news site both spring to mind in that instance.

The biggest problem was the "disagreements" between the pro and anti-war camps. The abuse they would hurl at each other was quite intense. Despite what some people think about the tolerance DU had towards moderates: It was always believed that the pro-war left had a legitimacy. Others thought not ;-)


But also Candidate Wars:

Whilst I don't pretend to have experienced the worst of candidate wars I was "privilaged" to experience the start of candidate wars. Something that was going to turn DU into a cesspit for the next year or so. Goodness me the mendacity; those security service boys were babes compared to the Deaniacs; the Kerrybots et al when it came to online mendacity.

28. Well

I was a mod during a good portion of 2004, including election night. That was tough.
A certain absolutely disgusting photo that got spammed all over the board one day during my first term also keeps popping to mind unfortunately. Not a defining moment, but unfortunately remembered.
