"A kid who tells on another kid is a dead kid."
Edited on Tue Apr-04-06 02:47 PM by RandomKoolzip

One of the great joys of my youth was getting HBO when I was nine years old, in 1984. That was the year that HBO used to broadcast "Over the Edge" at least twice a week. I must have seen that movie seventy times or more...."Ooooh Child" still makes me cry.

The thing I loved most about "Over the Edge" was that the kids in that movie didn't seem like they were acting. They were just like the fucked-up, violent, paint-huffing, directionless, feather-haired kids in my neighborhood. The movie seemed more like a documentary than a work of fiction.

"Over the Edge:" Thoughts? Opinions? Curses? Moose? Squirrel?

"Bye Bye, New Granola!"

On edit: It was also Kurt Cobain's favorite movie, for what it's worth.

1. I never saw that...
But Oooh Child does seem like a sad song, Over the Edge or not.

4. It had a great soundtrack...
Cheap Trick, The Ramones, and uh...Jefferson Starship, I think.

2. I too was a cable devotee of this film
excellent. I always wanted a double feature with Over the Edge and The River's Edge.

3. And "The Razor's Edge," with Bill Murray.
I finally saw "Over the Edge" again a few years ago, with my wife, who'd never seen it before. She disliked it very much. When it was over, she gave me this disgusted look and said, "Okay....WHY did you like this movie so much?!"

Some things just don't translate, I guess.

5. I remember and loved that film.

I was a Junior in High School. Damn how did I get so old??

It seems like a bunch of kids I knew.

I thought it was a pretty cool flick.

I'd love to see it again.

Remember the end of that movie where the kids who got caught were on the bus headed to juvie and their buddies were waving from the overpass??

HBO used to run movies months at a time back then. I still remember EVERY line from Flash Gordon.

7. Best, most realistic teen rebellion film EVER.
Very few false notes, if any.

6. I thought HBO only showed the movie 'Beastmaster' until
1989. My bad I guess!

8. Well, 'Beastmaster' and 'Just One of the Guys.'
They'd leap-frog eachother all day long, while on Cinemax, SCTV reruns would play all day long...all night strong.

9. I don't remember that one
But another Dillon film, "Drugstore Cowboy," was much the same in that it didn't seem like the kids were acting.

Come to think of it, Dillon never seemed like he was acting. From the first time I saw him, in a milk commercial (and he was a blond), he was one of the most natural actors I've ever seen.

What happened to him, anyway? With his chops, I figured he'd be around a long time.

13. He's still making movies.
He's just not the leading man anymore.

"Drugstore Cowboy" was a great film if only because Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites" is on the soundtrack.

18. Dude!
I'd forgotten that!

Great song. I remember when it came out — 1969. There I was, listening to reggae without even knowing it.

11. I'm drawing a blank on that one.
I tend to avoid Matt Dillon movies at all costs (with one noteable exception).

15. It's SO worth a look.
Head and shoulders above everything else he's done, and much truer than any of those dumbo SE Hinton flicks he starred in later...plus, he's not the main character.

What's the exception?

16. Me too.
That was my favorite part.

Shit, if they hadn't closed down the rec center, the riot never woulda happened!

In retrospect, "Over The Edge" is a lot like "Do the Right Thing."

Over the intercom and stuck in my head.
