3. what I find more disturbing....
is the murder of the toy bird. He explained that he can't fly, and then when he's tossed out over the Island of Misfit Toys, he's just thrown out - all the other toys got an umbrella to soften their landing. The poor little birdie just smashes into the ground :(

11. Maybe Santa knew
that it was just a psychological problem that made the bird think he couldn't fly. Kinda like that doll who has no discernible aberration. Sometimes these things are all in your head.

7. Both for me too
kind of touching in a way but a little disturbing. It was made in 1964 before the women's movement, I'll excuse them. :-)

Is this a cartoon? A Christmas show?

Christ, I have let a sheltered life.

on edit: For God's sakes - You don't mean Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer, do you?

on edit again: sexism? disturbing? murder? WTF? Are we taking about Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer? Well, only if you are looking for it. C'mon. :eyes:

And Christ, I have NOT let THAT much of a sheltered life.

15. Santa is a complete asshole in that special
First he banishes Rudolph from the North Pole, then he has the absolute nerve to ask him to pull his sleigh on Christmas Eve, without even so much as an apology. Every time I see this, I wish that Rudolph would tell Santa to go stuff himself.

16. Yeah, we watched it last night
and I turned to my wife and said "No wonder this is all my gay friends' favorite Christmas special." Rudolph's being ostracized, as well as the simply FLAMING Herbie, is such a good accidental metaphor. But it struck me that Santa was an ass, with his "What the heck is that nose, Dad?" reaction. "Better straighten up and fly right...blahblah...not Adam and Steve..."

20. There's a pregnant pause when Herbie and Rudolf meet
And talk about teaming up. Rudolf says it's fine with him as long as Herbie doesn't mind his nose, and Herbie lisps, "No, if you don't mind my being a -- dentist." After which they sing and roll around in the snow, and Herbie builds a snow effigy of his nasty old elf boss and violently smashes its face in.

Was anyone else bothered by the Lion King of the Island of Misfit Toys, who refuses to help the gang and then immediately demands that they help him? I know who he'll be voting for in 2004.

I agree with everyone who says Santa Claus is a complete unsantalike ass in this one. I guess the writers had to betray his character to create the drama of Rudolf and Herbie's ostracism, because there's no way in real life the kindly old Santa Claus would ever allow dentistphobia to flourish at the North Pole, and he would certainly never engage in noseism his very own self!

22. Dentistphobia

Yes, there is a part of philosophy that says everyone has a place and a part to play. There's no reason The North Pole couldn't have a dentist. Or that Rudolph's nose is isn't designed for some as yet undeifined purpose.

This whole story only works as a morality play if you believe that different equals = unuseful to the group.

I always liked it b/c I identified with Rudolph and Herbie. I did feel different, and very ungrouplike growing up.

21. No, after watching the Rankin/Bass marathon with the kids last
weekend, I found it educational...i.e. the evil Russian in "Jack Frost" symbolizing what our thoughts were during the cold war. It is actually quite funny to watch now. :7

24. I had my wife thinking Christmas Town is in the S. Pole
She saw another Christmas special with a penquin trying to get to the S. Pole and got all confused. I kept it going. I awore Santa lived in the S. Pole and everything she was taught was wrong. It was kind of funny.
